Radio One Acquires Cox Houston

Isn’t El Zol a tropical format? Past chatter on this board is that tropical really doesn’t work in Houston. Is there enough of a market for it now, or is it a concept that can be customized to fit here?

For sure Houston Could handle a tropical station. Interesting thing .. 107.9 Chicago (la ley ) is now broadcasting LA MEGA on Hd2. Interesting conversation with Jesus Salas today a good buddy of mine would make me think they are getting ready to announce some big deals.

Earlier posts have pointed out that the presumed demise of Country Legends on 97.1 will improve listener share on 93Q as well as The Bull. But there is another station that is probably thrilled to see a format change on 97.1: KVST.

In Montgomery County the 97.1 signal is equal to the Missouri City Sticks (Including 92.9 and 100.3) so K-Star Country 99.7 has three format competitors at the same good strength. The deal should bring that number down to two, which ought to make the folks at New Wavo quite happy.

Country KSAM 101.7 in Huntsville is probably smiling as well, as the 97.1 signal is also strong there.

If Leon Hunt were able, he'd likely be jumping for joy, too, as KMVL and KIVY would also stand to benefit from the demise. I'd bet Stephen Yates won't be heartbroken down in Lufkin either.

Wasn't the tropical format on 880, and associated Houston translator, for a time? KJOZ makes it to my QTH, and while it now sounds like Regional Mexican, it was playing more of a Caribbean sound not that long ago.

For awhile there was a tropical format on 880 but was not on a translator. It's now La Mejor found on 104.5.

There are at least a half-dozen ”tropical” formats depending on the nation or region of Latin America. APuerto Rican will hate tropical from Mexico, and an Argentine will like neither’s form of the rhythms. Even Central Americans will have different forms and artists in their Tropical music.

About 15-20 years ago there was a format on The-AM-Station-That-Shall-Not-Be-Mentioned-Here called "Sonido". I recall it was a Central American focused Tropical format. Didn't last very long.

Rumba 92.5 was also a Tropical variant, and it seemed like La Calle 92.5 also had some Tropical content.

Thinking about it, there are really three tropical formats that are all different just in Colombia...

Cumbia: most of the "good songs" are from the 60's and 70's, so it is an oldies format.
Vallenato: The "country music" of Colombia. Total parallel with US country in appeal.
Salsa: While the music is Puerto Rican / Newyorican in origins, it spread into Colombia and Venezuela in the later 70's and 80's and is very popular in mostly urban areas.

So just in one country you could have three different tropical formats!

No, it's not.

In fact, among the high rated stations there is no dance/europop station at all in Buenos Aires and even less so outside of that market.

In most radio programming the formats (other than the "national music" of each country) in Buenos Aires look just like Bogotá or Lima or Mexico City. Lots of CHR and AC, with stations doing all or some music in English, news, talk, sports formats, rock in both Spanish and English, and then the local variants like cumbia villera in Argentina, Grupera in Mexico and Vallenato in Colombia.

Interestingly, the highest researching music in Buenos Aires is Cumbia Villera, which is a techno variant of traditional Colombian cumbia.

It was around for a cup of coffee on what's now "Air 1' in DFW, too. As was "Concierto", "XO", "Baila", etc. At least with Air 1, the signal finally has some stability.

Guess I'm still too new to the forum, but why is 850 unmentionable?

Oddly enough, that format did quite well on the 93.5 signals in LA when SBS operated them, and they were only sold to take care of debt.

They did moderately well, wandering between a 1.4 and 1.8. But that was in the diary system. Niche formats have all done much worse in the PPM as they have no "phantom cume" that shows up in the PPM.

They did tell me that the power increase could take several years. Also looking at the coverage maps it seems like they will only really expand 5 miles. Should still sound better outside of the protected contour I think.
