Radio One Acquires Cox Houston

More likely that Univision would sell a station, namely KQBU. I have to wonder about the future of TUDN Radio once its affiliates that were sold to Latino Media Network launch new programming late this year or early 2024. While KQBU was not part of that sale (KLAT was, though) Univision might close TUDN Radio and sell 93.3 in Houston. As David Eduardo mentioned, they have the Spanish language formats covered with KLTN, KAMA, and KOVE.

I know you’re going too far, ( different market) but they could always have stations in English. 107.5 Vibe in San Antonio is just an example. Also here in Houston they had PARTY.
BTW MrTejano, I guess I don’t have to plead to Alfred to sell KROI any more. Maybe he heard me.🤣
And there you go 😂

Ahhhh, at last. Here is a post about radio stations and not about HD or translators. For sure KTHT and KROI will be spun off. The speculation has begun along with many good discussions about what is to be. It depends on the how much and who is willing to buy. KROI would make a great KCOH-FM, but I don't see that happening. The story has just begun and more conversations are coming.

Radio One has announced it will acquire Cox Media Group's stations in Houston TX. **More coming...**

The last two words stood out to me from Radioinsight Facebook post.
Please click the link next time. That was a placeholder cached by Facebook as I published the press release and rewrote to a full story...

There is also the option of SBS, Entravision or some independent Spanish operator getting one of the stations. Houston is one of the few US markets that lacks an affiliate for the popular Erazno y la Chocolata afternoon show.

Urban One is not a traditional radio company. It is involved in other businesses, including casinos. Not unlike Apollo.

that explains their attempt to enter to the brand new Richmond casino market, Disney wanted to get a DVC style resort in DC before pulling out in 2011 after they opened Hawaii's Aulani Resort.

I’m curious as to how “The Vibe” would do in Houston. I don’t think 93.3 is the place for it, despite that frequency’s past “Party” incarnation. 92.1 would be preferable.

SBS actually had a Houston presence for a decade when they owned KTBU/55, running their Mega-TV network. Sold it to Tegna a couple of years ago.
Estrella Media u forgot
Estrella seems to be easing its way out of the radio business in order to concentrate on television. The thought crossed my mind that a new player in the market could wind up with 92.1, 97.1, 98.5, and 107.9 should Estrella unload its Houston cluster. Send the irrelevant 101.7 to a religious operator.
A deal that may be dead.
Virtually dead; I give Standard General-Tegna maybe a 2% chance of going through. Strange to think that a year ago we thought Cox would have a Houston cluster of two TV and four radio stations. Now they will be completely gone, how things can change.

I feel for the people at KHOU/KTBU, they’ve been left twisting in the wind for the past 14 months. Once the Standard General deal dies, they will still be in limbo as Tegna executives (who thought they were sailing into retirement with a nice buyout) will likely put the group back on the market, beginning another round of uncertainty.

I'm not claiming a lot of familiarity with the Houston market bases on a couple of visits, but I know KTHT has quite a northerly signal (only Houston station I remember getting in Crockett) and I wonder who else that signal could fit in with. (OK, my wife likes Classic Country).

Never really listened to The Vibe, is it like another KRBE?

I would try to watch their shows on Mega TV and would not find anything relevant to watch. Nothing in my taste, maybe it was just me not liking it. But I can’t say I would walk to any restaurant or any friends house that would at least have the tv on watching that channel. And I do have lots of Centre American friends and step brothers.

So we have now seen a similar playbook in three markets for Radio One: bulk up and diversify the cluster. First in Charlotte in 2020 (swap with Entercom), then Indianapolis last year absorbing Emmis, and now in Houston with an acquisition and spinoff with Cox.

I would imagine consideration would be given to use the required spinoffs in this transaction to bulk up the other Radio One markets that are not at the ownership limit.

- In Dallas, Radio One has two FMs (cap is five)
- In Atlanta, they have four FMs, but one of them is a dog and two others are marginal including a simulcast.
- In DC, they have four FMs and two AMs. Two FMs are in a simulcast, one of which is a suburban not-quite-rimshot
- in Philly, they have two FMs and one AM

If Cumulus was interested in the Houston spinoffs then maybe, their one AM and one FM in DC would nicely fit under a cap for Radio One (I'm not sure how interested in conservative talk they are in their home market though).

If Cumulus was interest in adding in Houston, they would probably not be interested in decreasing in Dallas, but the combination of the Cumulus and Radio One clusters would be intriguing, with only one required spinoff.

If i was Alfred i would Seperate the Eagle Signals and go with spanish. They seem to now be in 3-4 markets with a spanish format. Bring back Boom.

Radio One does do Spanish formats, but in small towns like Indianapolis and Columbus. They would get massacred in Houston.

The only thing going for them is that they would give clearance to SBS's El Terrible show.

As it turns out, the pairing of 92.1 and 97.1 — a simulcast pair ages ago, now with upgrades to 92.1 — do give you pretty good coverage of the Houston Market.

97.1 has performed really well for the limited signal, and the playlist is far more up to date than it was 10 years ago. Whether a new owner would want to keep it going is anyone’s guess.

93.3 in Dallas for 92.1/97.1 in Houston?

There’s been a lot of discussion of what Audacy would do with an extra signal (FM sports). But it’s less clear what Cumulus would do with an extra, blank signal. Could Houston support a full-market third country station?

My take would be 92.1 and 97.1 both going to EMF, taking with it the most interesting commercial format on the air in the market today. But maybe we’ll be surprised.

They have Spanish in two markets where a small facility is also the only facility: Cincinnati and Indianapolis. They had a bad experience with Spanish in Houston and it is unlikely that they would compete with established stations.

They have an unused translator in St. Louis. You'd think they'd take that and the only Spanish FM in the market.

If Radio One does in fact break up the KGLK/KHPT simulcast, I could see the return of Boom on one of the signals. But there's no way they get rid of the format entirely to do Boom on one signal and a Spanish language format on the other. Plus, with the typical top dog in Spanish language radio in Houston struggling (for its standards) like it has been for a bit, I don't think it's a good time for a station to flip to Spanish, anyway.
