Looking at the declining numbers for 97.9, what do you think will be the next move for Radio One? 94.5 had better numbers than 97.9 this time, but I think that's just curiousity of the new format. Since Mark McCray is the new PD over there, will he make a difference? Opinions?

What they need to do if Old School 94.5 going to be popular is swap frequencies with 97.9 The Beat, otherwise Old School 94.5 will not last

look at the columbus ohio board, there's an entire string...

I really don't get what happened with B-97.9. For you guys that track this, has there been a general decline everywhere for rap/urban or similar that's aimed at 18-34 black males? If so, why? I know people outgrow formats, but is there's possibly a commeasurate decline in the younger black population that replaces the one that's aging out of the demo? Or is it a bad time in music right now--is it the same regurgitated and non-creative and often hate-filled stuff that's been in vogue for years? It just seems strange that K-104 and B-97.9 have both fallen sharply over the last couple of years after long stretches at the top of 12+. Or is this the fault of the PPM's? I'm grasping at straws here, but there must be a real reason for this.

And 94.5 sounds like it's fallen back into its ways of old...I'll surf by there often, but seldom hear anything familiar or anything I'd consider 'true' old school. The stunting during the format "change" had some great stuff being played. What happened?

I agree Mike, 94.5 sounded better in stunt mode, and that's because Candy had let staff members pick the music during that period.

As for 97.9, I think it's a few things. PPM, the quality of music, and last but not least, the mindset of young America has changed. Black, white, mexican-american; today's young folks basically have the same tastes in music, so a station like 106.1 is the perfect station for them.

Does Radio One own any Top 40 stations?

They just flipped a station in the north from and urban station to a "JACK" station. I'm not sure what market it was done.

100.9 Radio Now in Indianapolis is top 40.

Gotta follow the money, I guess. Radio One is stuck out in DFW, with two "Kiss"-type stations already, plus Mix and perhaps Edge and Radio Disney taking sloppy seconds...and already having a "Jack" here cancels out that idea they're trying elsewhere. But I just can't picture a "gangsta"-type waiting through Justin Bieber and all those Miley Cyrus song-imitations just to hear something that resembles rap or hip-hop. And the rap heard on CHR stations is some white-washed Kid Rock-ish wannabe garbage, anyway.

But modern rock's taking a hit, too. It seems like that anyone who doesn't fall into the iPod generation is gravitating to what's familiar and/or to country. You really can't create a pop Top 40 list anymore that's of any value...those folks under 30 are all over the map, and that's the way they seem to like it. So what happens to music radio once "our" generations die off?
