In a move that is likely to rankle Arbitron executives, Radio One/Houston has signed an agreement with Houston-based research firm The Media Audit to have the signals for its three radio stations in the market — CHR/Rhythmic KBXX (The Box), Urban AC KMJQ (Majic 102) and Regional Mexican KROI (La Mera Mera) — encoded for a series of tests TMA will soon conduct for its Smart Cell Phone media monitor.
Radio One has thus far declined to participate in Arbitron's Portable People Meter Houston market trial, and while Radio One/Houston Market Manager Doug Abernethy appreciates the effort that Arbitron has put into the PPM, he believes the industry needs more information and additional ways to sell radio's advertising strengths.
Abernethy says, "It is well recognized that the radio industry needs to move to an electronic measurement. The Media Audit/Ipsos solution addresses this need for more information as it includes multiple media platforms as well as retail information. The Media Audit/Ipsos use of the cell phone to passively measure audio listening makes sense for today's society. We appreciate the opportunity to be a part of developing the best technology to deliver accurate and reliable radio ratings."
