Heck, what's gonna happen to WERE once the urban talk format gets pulled?

Yeah, Al Sharpton will stay, and a local morning show will apparently still exist (Basheer Jones has taken over for Ronnie Duncan), but to me, 1490 is a big ol' question mark. So, what're they gonna do? Urban oldies format of some kind? Brokered religious programming to complement WJMO/1490 (like we need THAT)? Or a sell-off/write-off?

That would be a more prudent question, IMHO.

Boy, I betcha OM Chris Forgy now wishes he made the deal with Good Karma to swap AM/1300 for AM/1540, no?

As for brokered shows... I doubt it. Even when WERE was at 1300, they couldn't fill a significant amount of time slots with paid programming. That explains why PD columnist Dick Feager once mused about tuning in WERE at 1am on a weekend and heard an hour-long relay of WBBR/New York, including NY tx/wx - (Yes, their TOH news was once from a New York buisness station!!!) - simply because no one bought that time slot. What does anyone in their right mind think that they could do it as decently on an even POORER 1 kW signal?

The sched now will have gaps at 10a-1p and from 4p-7p. Some stations (Detroit, for one) are filling those with local talent, but Cleveland obviously cannot support such a move. Brokered talk/ethnic/USA Radio network feed in those time periods, along with a morning show that's new and still needs to be established? That's trouble right then and there.

Don't forget, either, that Radio One is in some serious financhial trouble. They already left Dayton, and are selling off their non-core assets. Their urban talk stations in Miami and Boston were sold off and changed format. I don't think that it'll happen with WERE just yet... the key word being YET.

Don't forget, either, that Radio One is in some serious financhial trouble. They already left Dayton, and are selling off their non-core assets. Their urban talk stations in Miami and Boston were sold off and changed format. I don't think that it'll happen with WERE just yet... the key word being YET.

Radio One left the Dayton market because it's a hideously under-performing one. Also considering the fact that the Dayton Market is already saturated with Clear Channel and Cox stations, it's a difficult market to compete in already, now compound that with changing demographics, and a market that's smaller than Cleveland or Columbus, but has just about as many commercial stations, all vying for the same advertising dollars...It's ridiculous.

Yes. But I was never very impressed with the programming they did in Dayton. The hip hop station was the "PD of the month" club, and RO sent the 50,000 watt CHR down the dumper, because they'd never give it any budget. Everything seemed to be run as cheaply as possible...and often sounded like it, too.

Radio One still own 1090 W I L D-AM (Daytimer Talk,Classis soul/Gospel tape ) Boston . 1090 is still on sale.

Since Radio One is in alot of trouble right with serious financhial problems right now, I wonder if they will sell off more stations?
