Radio One Rumor Mills

With no OM, and just two PD's left (Big Bink at Power and Warren at Magic), it appears to me that a sale is on its way for Radio One.

More importantly, a very close inside source informed me that if any station wanted to pick up the Jack FM format, JD Kunes and Lee are available as a package. JD was the one who programmed it locally and Lee was "Low Paid Lee" and production guy. Hopefully a station takes heed to this!

That would be great move for the whoever picks it up, and of course for the market.

I know it's hardly scientific, but the outpouring of Facebook dismay over Jack's flip (www.facebook.com/98.9JackFM ) supports the validity of the significant ratings momentum Jack was starting to show shortly before plug was pulled.  I'm not referring just to the number of comments and frustration over the flip, but also the fact that many indicated they had just recently discovered the station.  This is all especially notable given that Jack didn't really promote its Facebook page -- it was generally kind of dead and had less than 600 likes.

Someone should definitely catch this local Adult Hits wave while the momentum is strong, and hopefully with the Jack imagery, Kunes (who, to his great credit, was clearly on the right track toward the end) and "Low Paid Lee."

BTW, I doubt more than a handful of people reading the FB page realized that Howard Cogan, who posted a nice parting thank you, is the voice of Jack.

The question would be who would want to buy them? Mainline would have made good with the variety hits format if they would have bought Jack. But they run r&b in Dayton and Louisville too. So buying those 2 along with jack would have been good.

They also run one in Richmond, Virginia too. That's what made them come up with that format in Dayton. They might have one in Louisville soon since the talk format they had there failed.

How can you draw a conclusion that they are for sale from that ? there would only be two PD's since there are two stations, and now that the cluster is smaller why need and OM when you can split the duties between the remaining PD's

the Jack format is not theirs to sell it is a syndicated format owned by SparkNet Communications. so how can they package any staff with it.

as far as rumors go this one is kinda weak.

JD was also the OM/PD for the stations at 717 E. David Rd., i.e. Z-93, Hot 102.9, 92.1 WROU, and 1410 WING-AM, when they were owned by Radio One. He left after the transition to Main Line.
For the record, heritage CHR/Pop/Top 40 Z-93 was blown up for Adult/Variety Hits. Z was a great station, and it should still be on the air today. ML could've flipped one of the other stations in the building to AH.
For the record, the AH station in Virginia is Liberty 98.9.

Radio One in Cincy is dropping urban oldies from WMOJ 100.3 at midnight tonight, in favor of Christmas music. It will pick up CBS Sports Radio Network January 2nd.

My guess is RO is going to sell off the Columbus properties. To whom is anyone's guess. I bet they're also going to sell off their Cincy properties as well. RO is having trouble...or so it seems.
