Radio One

Radio One, after blowing out the fabulously talented (and company veteran) Kathy Brown in DC has now blown out the entire full and part-time air staff at its urban AC there.

Apparently, once they saw the PPM numbers surge after cutting back on jock talk, they decided that they didn't need any jocks.

With sister station KMJQ doing quite well in PPM, will they kill the goose that lays the golden egg here? Or is this a local GM going nuts with cost cutting and using PPM for cover?

My personal opinion: I think some of the changes in jock talk that stations have made since PPM are good ones - it keeps the station moving, and a good jock can still shine without blabbing all over the place - but I don't think jockless is the way to go. Stations sound better to me with a human element.

If you sell time for a living, which would you rather have? A station with a syndicated morning show and jockless the rest of the day, or a typical mix of jocks and tracks? Does an air staff make a difference in what you can sell, or is it just a numbers game?

Well, as for the local Radio One stations, they've got postings on the Work In Texas website of positions they're allegedly hiring for - these positions include: On-Air Talent, Board Operator, P/T Mixer, and Yolanda Adams Morning Show Phone Screener...Maybe, just maybe, the Houston cluster knows something that DC doesn't know - like you still need good radio people to run/operate radio stations.

No, Radio None Houston doesn't know that, after firing a DJ for playing music that was banned on their stations, at a NON-RELATED event.

Well, based on what i have read in the DFW board; they are now cleaning up shop at 97.9 the beat and 94.5 k-soul up there. Anybody thinks upper management will clean some more things up here in Houston? Will the Urban AC upgrade come to Majic 102.1? (Let's not forget that DC's WMMJ was also successful before their change)
