Radio PA

A network is only as strong as its affiliates. Radio PA does an excellent job in Harrisburg and the sourrounding area. Elsewhere, it's a different story. It would be great to have more contributions from around the state when big stuff is going down. You know how radio news has deteriorated.

It has. And to be fair, many of my original comments about Radio PA could be applied equally to radio news, in general.

IIRC "Radio PA" began as "Radio Pennsylvania".
When did the service begin and name change occur? Also, did you originate the feature with the guy who opened saying "It's A Beautiful Day In Pennsylvania"?

GIMME MORE PETE PRAVAK ! (OR HOWEVER YOU SPELL IT)....PETE'S DA MAN !

When I'm crossing PA on I-80 (no tolls yet) and hitting the scan button on the car radio, it seems like every other station through the Appalachians is taking news from Radio PA. Outside of major markets, these local stations would probably not have any kind of regional or semi-local news without it.

Do they produce any regional talk shows like some of the other state networks.

They did a weekly talk show called "Ask the Governor", with the esteemed Ed Rendell. However, it was very short-lived.

Radio PA puts out a very good product and it is of particular value when legislators from the local area are working in the capital. It keeps constituents informed of what they're doing though they may not have time to make the rounds to their local stations.

i haven't heard radio PA in years but when i did a good 10 years ago on WNPV in lansdale (not sure if they still carry it) it reminded me of USA network news that a lot of low budget stations carry for national news at the top of the hour. very generic and low budget, but decent. they do what they can on a limited budget.

Agreed. My only beef is the extreme commercial load you have under their barter agreement. But if that's what it takes for Pennsylvania to keep its state news network, then so be it.

Hey Brad

I believe you guys at radio Pa do a decent job ! I have heard your newscasts on Woyk in York.I enjoy all kind of news relevant to Pennsylvania.(EXCEPT FOX-FAIR AND BALANCED ON WSBA )
Keep on keeping on.

I came across this discussion by accident and now I'm curious. Do they have a published list of affiliates some place? Their website has an affiliate map and it shows an (unidentified) affiliate in Philadelphia, plus one, each, in Chester and Bucks Counties and two in Montgomery County. But I don't think I've ever heard them.

It also shows on the map an affiliate in Mercer County, but I have yet to figure out which one it is. It's too bad because I wonder what it's like.

It actually began in 1986/1987 in Philadelphia as "The Pennsylvania Network". Don't know the whole inner workings, but basically the money for that venture ran out before it could float. It had a new bunch of investors in 1989, moved to State street in Harrisburg and that is when it became "Radio Pennsylvania" That group of investors also came up short. WITF Inc. fell into a deal for the network in 1990 and it the studio / news operation moved into basically a broom closet in the lower section of the WITF TV/FM facility at 1982 Locust Lane Harrisburg. When Radio Pennsylvania moved from Philadelphia to Harrisburg, the C-Band 2 Channel Analog SCPC uplink was constructed in the satellite "pit" at WITF. I am proud to have had a hand in the engineering aspects of this network from 1992 to 1999.
