Saw an interesting comment on a Razorback Message Board about Paul Eells and it got me to thinking. Who are the best young play by play announcers in the state? I know we have talked before about Chuck Barrett or Steve Sullivan being the next PBP guy when Paul is done, but who do you think are the good PBP guys in the next generation (40 and younger) of broadcasters? Are their any? Here is the quote from the board...

"...another part of the problem is there is not a pool of young radio play by play guys to take over for paul's generation. it's not something you can just show up and do well but few want to do radio anymore but would rather do TV which by nature is a less descriptive role since you the viewer can see the action. they most fun and enjoyment I've had in sports was doing radio play by play..."

Jeff Matthews (Conway)
Brad Haworth (Mountain Home)
Preston Lewis (Russellville/formerly Arkansas Ladybacks)
Matt Stoltz (Voice of ASU Indians)
Ernie Witt, Jr. (Fort Smith)
Gary Campbell (Harrison)

All of those guys could hold their own with a college team or in a large market. And all of them are under forty...

Ernie is a talented guy and knows sports. But Jeff Matthews, Preston Lewis, and Gary Campbell--PLEASE. If Matt Stoltz was really good, then why is he doing ASU games? Not familiar with Brad Haworth, but keep in mind he IS in Mountain Home.

Just because they aren't doing the Razorbacks or have a statewide sports show like Barrett doesn't mean that they aren't good play-by-play talents.

There are some people in small markets like Harrison or Mountain Home that are exceptional at what they do. The location they are in is a matter of personal choice, or the fact that they might not ready to pursue something bigger. I mean look at Fort Smith... that is a market that has been blessed with good local sports, and there have been some pretty talented play-by-play people including Ernie that have passed through there. They've got talented people there right now...

Arkansas State despite the fact that it is a lousy athletic program with no following, IS unfortunately a Division 1 school, and that will look good on Matt's resume when he goes somewhere else here in a few years. He doesn't do a bad job.

If you have actually listened to the people I mentioned and don't think they do a good job, then your expectations are way too high. Any one of them would do a great job with a larger program or market. They'll be discovered at some point...

Looks like we'll have to agree to disagree. I have heard Jeff, Preston, and Gary and I've worked with people who do a better job and they knew they weren't ready to move to the next level. I'm sure they're fine people, but as sports talent--for me--they leave something to be desired.

Hey u-j, I'd be curious to know who you think is good that you've heard. You've mentioned your dislike for Jeff, Preston, and Gary as PBP guys, but I don't think you have mentioned someone that you think is good.

If Gary is doing play-by-play, I don't know about it. KWHN carried the Southside Rebels and Westark basketball for the longest time, and I have always been amazed by his delivery and such, especially on sports. After Clear Channel bought the station, they dropped all the local sports and the Arkansas Razorbacks. Now most of the area schools that have broadcasts are on with the Fort Smith Radio Group, with the exception of Greenwood football which is on Spirit 106.

Hell if Gary Elmore walked into the box while I was doing a game... I'd probably hand him my headset just so I could watch, listen, and learn. He is one of the greats!
