Radio Pirate Interfering With KMOX AM-1120 St Louis MO

Just to let everyone know that I am an AM DXer which is my favorite past-time hobby of listening to radio stations from far out of town or even out of state. I like to listen to local news from other cities, because at times I get sick and tired of listening to local news here in Chicago.

I was on my way to work this morning I was listening to KMOX from out of St. Louis MO. (This was around AM-1120KHz) At around 6:30 this morning I was trying to hear the local news report from St. Louis, all of a sudden I heard some stupid person come breaking in on KMOX preaching about god and using cuss words over the airwaves he was using the F word though out his transmission acting like he was a preacher with bad choice of words.

I do NOT want to hear that jerk when I’m trying to listen to the news on KMOX! Then I’ve switch the to another radio station, but what ever station I tried to tune in to, I can still hear that dumb stupid jerk bleeding all over throughout the whole entire AM band spectrum!

He was saying “F$@K No! And F$@&K that Sh%t! The lord doesn’t gives two Sh%ts about the war in Iraq, President Bush is an ass&%$@ and besides, that Hillary Clinton is nothing but a lousy F$@King C#nt and a half! Why did Jesus died on the cross for? because he’d already paid the price for our sins!!!”

I do not know who this person was, but I hate people who use bad language towards against the Lord by using his name in vain (that’s if I had said this right?)

I have a few questions for anyone on this board? About what do I do? Or how do I to go about filing a complaint to the FCC?
a. Do I have to write this on a piece of paper and mail my compliant to the FCC by US Mail?
b. Or can I or is there a way I can electronically file my complaint online of the FCC’s website?

Can somebody help me out with this?

Thank you very much
Bob

First off, what kind of car radio, then where were you driving? KMOX is strong, but not that strong in Chicago.
If you heard the guy on all AM frequencies, you must have been VERY close to his location.
Most radios would be selective enough to keep this out, unless overloaded.
How long in your drive did this continue?
Were the whistles mixed in? If he was on 1120, any difference in frequencies results in a heterodyne whistle.
If he's on all frequencies of the AM band of YOUR radio, he's probably getting into a LOT of telephone circuits somewhere nearby.

There IS an online site at the FCC where you can report pirate activity, And while I was a pirate once, I'd agree that his
particular "style" AND intrusion on other services warrants reporting him. I hate poor technical RF practice.

Hello Tom,
1. I do not drive, I rely on public transportation.
2. I own a Sony Walkman model SRF-M37V.
3. I was on the 6:30am Metra Northwest Line going to Arlington Hts.
4. My train ride is about 45 minuts.
5. The whistles mixed in over at the Jefferson Park station.
6. After that this guy was bleeding all over the AM band.

!!! Really! Hmm. I drive right through there every day when at home (not traveling) going east-west on my way from Chicago to Rolling Meadows. And in the morning I'm there between 7 and 8.

In that particular area, the train tracks parallel and run next to Interstate 90 and 94 , and that particular area sees big traffic ups.
I believe you were overloaded by a Super-Duper Trucker on Ch 19 with about 1 kilowatt.
I hear exactly what you describe before on CB 19.

This is far more likely than anyone running a pirate potty-mouth evangalism format.

Wow! I didn't know that! A CB Trucker! Hmmm! Very Interesting! Here I thought that someone with a short-wave ham radio set was broadcasting from his house doing that. I never thought it would a CB radio trucker with a 1 kilowatt CB radio transciever was causing all that monkey business.

By the way Tom, would you be able to send me a link to that FCC private activity link from the FCC websits?

Thank you very much
Bob

I second that suggestion, that it was someone with a way-overpowered CB. There used to be someone in my town that ran a killer amp on various CB channels, usually 6 or 11, and he would bleed all over the dial. Sometimes he would adjust his modulation way beyond 100% on purpose. This moron would be so overmodulated that if he was on 6 (27.005 MHz), you couldn't even discern what he was saying. He would flood frequencies with voice-induced noise from 15 through 70+ MHz, with some harmonics going up through VHF-Hi TV (200MHz!). And, yes, he would boom through one of my AM radios with no problem, as well as the corded telephone.

I was gonna try to find the link to to the page to report pirates to, but I am confident it was was a super-trucker.

Then there's the words of professor Gene Wiggins at Valpo Tech back in '80 or so in transmitters class...

"The FCC's just given up on policing CB, they know it's hopeless. (wrings hands )"

They're fully aware that this happens. They just can't do anything to enforce it.

Be glad you weren't sitting in church when this guy came by and walked into the PA system!
