Radio Predictions in 2022

Salem Media will have another talent hype up their "Candidate for Governor" in the same way Larry Elder was named as the opposition in the California's Governors race.

Spotify will end up being compared to Dish Network over audio content being removed due to label disputes.

VCY America will be named as a candidate to get KRDC Los Angeles from Disney in the same way VCY America gets the former Ed Stolz owned stations in Palm Springs and San Francisco.

Talk Radio hosts will be warned by their employers to not spread conspiracy theories about COVID-19 or they get sued from the states that enforce vaccine mandates, Pfizer and Moderna.

More political talk show hosts will be sued, fired or in some cases end up dead if they announce a "Cure for COVID-19" not approved by the FDA and not a vaccine.

Top 40/CHR Radio, AC/Hot AC will migrate to app only. FM will be like AM Radio of the 1990's and 2000's in some parts of the country.

Talk radio hosts will have to be pressured to tone down their rantings or they face a congressional hearing for sparking the next insurrection this time at state capitals because of the governors elections.

Podcasting will be further consolidated
More stations will move to smaller facilities (like Dayton, Ohio did).
90s/00s Classic Hits to be launched in several markets

Fox News and other companies will finally rein in or fire their pro-Trump and anti-vax "News" and talk show hosts or face more lawsuits.

More anti-vax talk show hosts will die from COVID. Hopefully some who survive will wake up, admit they were wrong, and encourage people to get the vaccine.

Dan will be getting a new Internet access and Transmitter for the radio station, within the next few days. With the Internet access, I'll soon be able to go online with the radio station and share this presentation with the world. Hope to be online, by this time next year, should God and the finances see fit. With the new Transmitter, I'll have a better sound quality and present RDS messaging for my first time ever. Which means everyone will get to see the name of the radio station and possibly the name of the songs and singers being played. Outside of these two happy events and me celebrating six years in February, I see no other changes coming to my area. It's going to be the same old thing that everyone here is known for doing. Yours truly will continue to do the Christian Variety Hits and Three Local Preachers thing.

As the mid-terms approach, the opposite will happen. A variety of anti-Biden shows will focus on the perceived shortcomings of the current administration and beat the "time for a change" drum, loudly.

It's interesting that as both a moderate independent and a radio person, the hosts who have died are people I have never heard of. I don't think that anti-vaxxers are prevalent in mainstraeam conservative talk, with mainstream meaning "they have more than 10 listeners".

You are talking about three of the most successful formats in radio today. While some CHR stations are off due to poor new releases and the lyrics of some songs, AC and Hot AC are doing well everywhere.

As an example, in NYC in 25-54 the CHR station was #1 in cume at 1.5 million and the AC station was #2 at 1.45 million. The sort of Hot AC WKTU was 3rd with 1.35 million in the sales demo.

Well I'm already seeing a slight tweak take place, on the local radio dial. As of late, they've been adding more of the 90s and early 2000s tunes on WRBZ in Montgomery. Could this be a new trend for classic hits radio? Just wondering.

Good point and KIIS Los Angeles tends to be the top revenue station for Iheart too and it's a CHR.

Another example is KBIG-FM which is a hot AC in Los Angeles which is another Iheart owned station that is doing OK. True I can see AC, Hot AC and CHR staying on FM for now.

It's the niche formats like AAA, Country and Classic Rock that's going to either move to a subchannel of HD stations or move to online only places on music apps.

Country and classic rock are doing fine in many areas. AAA would be the format largely moving to online/apps.

All due respect, but these points all sound like "Christmas Wishes" moreso than predictions for the upcoming year.

Are you talking specifically about LA? Because country and classic rock are not niche formats, and they won't be moving anywhere.

AAA is another story.

i predict that the following things will happen to radio in 2022:

National:
Audacy blows up all Alt stations and switches them to new formats, in LA, KROQ gets flipped to active rock to maintain it's branding, in New York 1010 WINS goes to 92.3 on the FM while staying put on AM at the same time, in Dallas, 103.7 flips to either KRLD or Fan format moves to the station while KRLD launches on 105.3 FM due to call letters already there. and the others may switch to a format that is needed in the markets or a simulcast of a AM news talk or sports talk station on by Audacy.

Many conservative talk show host will be fired from their job either for bring "in connection to the January 6th, 2021 insurrection attempt" or being anti-vax and ignoring the vaccine mandates and raising all hell about it.

DFW:
KEGL 97.1 The Eagle dies, flips to Sports Talk under the branding of "The Game" while becoming the de facto home of ESPN Radio all while Disney sells 103.3 KESN to a company that will either flips it to Spanish sports talk, or Spanish music format, a religious format (if it's EMF) or ethic broadcasting (if it's a ethic company).

the Russ Martin Show (minus Russ now, since he died in late February, somehow surviving the deadly deep freeze in Texas right before he died a week or 2 later) is moved over to Podcasting or KZPS LoneStar 92.5 as the new afternoon anchor (they would also become the new face of the station too if Bo & Jim retire as they aren't getting any younger) also they retire the Russ Martin Show" branding saying enough time has passed since Russ died.

also, as i mention in the National, KVIL will flip to either a simulcast of 1080 KRLD or have The Fan sports format move over to them.

Cumulus will buy 101.1 WRR from The City of Dallas, the Friends of WRR are told to shove it and WRR becomes KTCK-FM, flips from classical music to a simulcast of 1310 The Ticket while 96.7 becomes WBAP again and becomes the home of WBAP on the FM.

speaking of WBAP, they will build a new EAS emergency building at the Cedar Hill tower farm area to be ready for a major disaster and Brad Barton will broadcast their for it's "Grand Opening" and conduct a EAS Test from there instead of he pretaped "This is a test" message that airs in the DFW based Texas Monthly EAS test.

The time for any of those dismissals is long past. The only firings will be if the obsession of some hosts with the anti-vaccination idea causes lower ratings as more and more people realize that getting a jab is a good and safe thing.

Spanish language sports is singularly unsuccessful. There is only one sport of interest, soccer, and interests are divided by nation and region. Spanish dominant listeners don't care about the US soccer league, so there is no commonality.

Your point that there are a couple of under-performing FMs is valid; all are in play.

I doubt the city will approve a sale that does not preserve the heritage of the station. Of course, one "out" would be for the buyer to commit to preserving the format on HD-2 and perhaps negotiate nicely priced radios available for sale to station supporters.

AM is not appropriately located at TV and FM antenna farms. Too many towers in the area to re-radiate and distort the coverage and, likely, an RF hazard for riggers on the other towers from the medium power WBAP signal.

AM looks for flat, most lowlands, not hills. And a half-wave tower on 820 requires acres and acres of land for the ground system... flat land which I don't think is available at the TV site. WBAP is perfectly situated right now. They certainly will not be moving.

That's what they did in Houston, and it's part of the Friends' narrative of why they need to stop any change.

Obviously, the classical music group is older and likely does not understand newer technology. An HD-2 along with a streaming "station" would make the Dallas station as accessible as it is on just FM and open it up to out of area contributors and listeners.

If the deal with the city included an endowment from both the buyer and the city, they would likely be more likely to preserve the format well into the future.

There'll be a new Irish-Celtic hybrid radio station in Boston by next St. Patrick's Day. And its programming will be syndicated to radio stations all over the country.
