Radio Rebelde, 1180 khz, hrd. in W. Washington

I just logged Radio Rebelde for the second time around 0640 UTC, very strong behind KOFI, beaming mostly NW-SE, here in W. Washington. The programming is definitely // 5025 khz, and is strong enough to be heard barefoot on my Realistic TRF. In fact, a lot of the time it seems to be the second station on the frequency.

I also heard Radio Rebelde behind KBOI, during fadeups, also // to 5025. Much, much weaker, though. Could also hear it barefoot on the TRF, especially through headphones.

Over 2700 miles. I'm pretty stoked the TRF pulled it in without aid of a loop. The old radio still works pretty well.

I think I hear R. Rebelde behind KOFI right now as I type this, on a Superadio in the kitchen (listening to C2C).

For those living in the NW US (and other areas, too, probably) I'd suggest you switch on the DX radios and listen towards the SE.

Of course what you really meant to say was, "for those living in the NW US *outside* of KEX's coverage area (and other areas, too, probably) I'd suggest you switch on the DX radios and listen towards the SE." Right?

Still, that is a very nice barefoot catch when one can get far enough away from KEX's overdriven sideband crap. (Time for me to hit Global Tunerz!)

me TOO! Thanks to you, I figure since you're in Western USA I may have a good chance at it myself, and Bingo!
My qth is Phoenix AZ- and I am catching R Rebelde with ID now at 06:04 UT, I have been for the past few days but assumed it was a Mexican nearby.. boy was I off. I tuned to 5025kHz and I get more "bass" R Rebelde on the HF band. For me this is a first MW big DX that I know of! How exciting. I get a plethura of dx stations but IDing them is another story. Rebelde was easy.

I can hear the tell tale signature of trans-continental/pacific? hash on/around 843khz up to 850k and again from 920khz to 940khz. Is there a site where one can get a good idea of what a dxer may catch say, if you're in a certain location? For instance- I am in Phoenix AZ. Are there stations I should be looking out for? If anyone has a link to a dxer that there QTH in my general part of the US that would be great - I can use their logs to go by.
It's nice reading the Newfie's catches, but those aren't ones I would be aiming for.

How good do you get KMIA 710 at night? If it doesn't come in that well, you may be able to match 5025 to 710 as well. I matched 670 Rebelde to 5025 one time. That's 2800 miles from Western WA!!

I'm glad my post could be of some help. It's always cool to hear something from another country, especially if it's on the other side of the continent!

RE: stations to hear in Arizona.... I'm sure there are others here closer to your neck of the woods that could help.

One night I found a website maintained by a small club of MW DXers, one of whom is apparently located in Flagstaff.

Perhaps the Flagstaff DXer's listing could help give you a rough idea of what can be heard from your state. The listing seems to stop at 2007, maybe the DXer isn't adding to it anymore:

Bill Block from the IRCA reflector is located in Arizona. You could use his logs a guide:

Nice catch, boombox. Congratulations!

With all the juice that's being pumped into the atmosphere on 1180 by the Cubans to combat R. Marti, it's not surprising that R. Rebelde is turning up in all sorts of places. Oddly enough I've not heard it here in the Chicago area. My guess is that there are two reasons for that.... First, I haven't really tried for it (I probably should). Secondly, WHAM puts in a really good signal here in Northern Illinois.

Good going, Senor Boombox.

SW 5025 kHz is the quickest way to hear for a parallel of Rebelde. Radio Marti *might* make it, but of course their signal goes south. They have SW of 6030 kHz, which is being jammed like 1180, but more like warbles or tones.

WHAM certainly does put in a very good signal into Northern Illinois as I'm hearing them right now even with the radio oriented towards Cuba.
I can also hear WHAM often on the Northern Ireland tuner.

Tonight I'm hearing R Rebelde 670 (under KBOI), 710 (competing with the KFIA/KIRO/KSPN mess), 1180 (way under KERN) all making it into the SF Bay Area tonight! Marginal signals at best, but easy to match with 5025 khz in each case.

Are the Cubans on a sudden high power kick or are we just seeing good cx to that area? No matter, this marks my first from Cuba X 3 at this location! Feliz Navidad indeed. All west coast DXers should check these and any other Radio Rebelde frequencies that might be doable in your area.

Later: Rebelde on 600 as well. I usually hear nothing but KOGO there!

I do get R Marti rather poor to fair at best on SW, not so much on MW- but I'll try!

Wow- thanks guys for the links for the Arizona MW dxers- big, big help. Anyone who reads this board out of curiosity yet hasn't tried MW dxing, Go For It. There is nothing more fun to do in the middle of the night ;) I'll also try for that 710 station too.

Last night's propagation was odd, one minute Rebelde was coming in Good, few minutes after my post it disappeared for good for the night, before the Eastern daytimers woke up. Noticed sometimes MW conditions are great, HF not, vice versa. Sure opens up a whole new hobby for me, I've been a casual SW listener for 8 years and never gave MW dxing any serious thought til recently. Now off to the second hand stores for an analog receiver.. sometimes some good ones pop up once in a while.

thank you very useful. Mind you if I find any DXing sites that look like hidden gems I'll pass them along. I like to use MWLIST also http://www.mwlist.org/mwlist_quick_and_easy.php

too bad TV is all digital now.. those TV dxes sure were fun while they lasted. Darn digital everything now! if it weren't broke...
