radio reception in Winnipeg

Hi..does anyone know what the reception is like in Winnipeg on the local stations? What is the strongest AM/FM signal? What stations from the US can be heard clearly on AM in the daytime and on FM? What is DXing like in Winnipeg during the summer months?

Hi from Winnipeg. All the locals can be heard well with the city limits unless you are in certain areas of downtown or the Osborne Village area. This is due to the number of large buildings in these two areas but the reception will vary greatly depending on how a building might affect a station. This is more of a nuisance than a problem because you can move the radio around and get all the stations again.

As for strongest that is hard to say as they all do well. There are no "fringe" stations here that cover only part of the city.

DX from Winnipeg in the summer can be good on FM with nice openings on many hot days. The AM suffers as it does in any Canadian city in the summer due to the lack of hours of darkness.

If you want to know what I have heard from Winnipeg and areas around look at my logbook at:

what part of the city are the transmitters for the AM/FM stations located?

FWIW the FCC Curves program predicts that *no* U.S. FM station provides a useful signal in Winnipeg. The city is about 100km (60mi.) north of the border, and while there's a TV tower literally on the border, there are no FM stations on the U.S. side that far north.

That jibes with my recollection of my last visit: putting the car radio in scan found only Canadian stations. I*think* I could manually tune KJKJ-107.5 Grand Forks but reception could hardly be called "clear".

My AM recollections are pretty vague. I *think* KFGO-790 and KFYR-550 were clearly audible on a car radio. I doubt either one would be audible in the typical computer-noisy office environment. Ground conductivity is sky-high up there, so AM stations get out forever! (going in the other direction, CJOB is useful throughout most of North Dakota...)

Most of the transmitters are to the south of the city, with some FM's on top of major buildings in the downtown. WE get the Selkirk FM's clear here too as well as AM's from Altona Winkler Portage etc

I lived in Winnipeg as a kid, it was my city of birth, (actually St. Bonifcace) and all AM's had fantastic signals throughout the city and beyond. The ND station at 790 from my recollection was not that great due to splatter from the Ethnic station at 810, which to my memory had the worst signal of all the AM's. It was the first to fade as you left the city, but inside the city, the reception was just fine. Getting FM from outside of the city just didn't happen. There was at the time one FM in Selkirk and it was spotty in the south side of town at best. That's not the case now, though. Traveling east from the city, the AM's really lose their strength one you hit the Ontario border, but if you're willing to put up with static are still decent in Kenora (except for AM 810). Going west, the stations make it well into Saskatchewan. When CKY was still on AM, I could easily hear it into Regina. Back when I last went through Winnipeg, as a teen, FM wasn't something Canadian kids listened to. For me it was all about CKY and CFRW. THAT was amazing radio.

Winnipeg's CBW 990 must be throwing quite a signal, as it's a fairly regular visitor down my way, south of Ottawa.

Came across this thread belatedly. CBW indeed has a fine signal, but during the daytime hours, CJOB is even better by a considerable degree. As were the former CKY and CKRC.... on 580 AND 630 respectively.

No doubt fighting Montreal's CKGM, which is also on 990, which came in about as far west as Kingston.
