As Eggs Danny Thomas sits on his glass coffee table in the nude, he rates Chicago's newer stations and wants the other Radio-Info.com members to give their grades too!

WIND: (B-) I absolutely can't stand all the right wing nuts, but as a station it sounds good. The imaging is tight and they are commited to local news and traffic. Almost doesn't sound like a syndicated station. Ed Vrdolyak and Ty Wansley would have been great as a local duo, but they wont have any local talkers on there.

WCPT: (B) Doesn't sound as good or as cohesive as WIND, and the left wing nuts are as brutal as the neo-cons on WIND. Also not being on 24 hours is a major problem. I still give them a higher grade because your guy hangs more to the left. (HEY, It's my report card, you'll get your turn)

WRLL: (C) If they were on FM they would get a higher grade, hec, if I could get them in without static I'd bump the grade up. Is Uncle Lar still on there?

NINE: (D) I don't find them as creative as they think they are. The new website looks good, but the music is just the same junk in a different package. Hint hint: tweek that playlist and make a run for XRT's listeners. And aren't we getting tired of all this "we play what we want" or "we play anything" or "whatever we want" junk.

ZONE: (F) LED ZEP, AC/DC, GUNS n' ROSES, SLIPKNOT!!! Awesome! Totally Awesome!!! And they wonder why nobody is listening.

LOOP: (Incomplete) They are still working on it so i'll wait until they are done. Let's see if Johnny and Pirannah are coming back too. I'll admit I was worried that Emmis was going to add KoRn, Mudvayne and stuff like that that. It would be murder for the LOOP. Don't want them turning into the ZONE. They should add more classic/active variety. Similar to what Emmis has done with Modern rock at sister station....

Q101: (B-) Shuffle is good, but they should throw in more newer stuff to make their aging audience a little hipper. People over 30 watch MTV too. They were this close to going all rap, and I bet they are glad MANCOW didn't jump ship. They made the right move during the bitter Q101/ZONE war. They knew that all that Aggressive rape-rock was on it's way out. Now let's not play Depeche Mode 30 times a day.

LA KALLE: (C) Yo prefiero Viva, pero la verdad es que "LA KALLE" no suena tan mal. Estan tocando Gwen Stefani y 50 CENT tambien. TRANSLATION: I prefered Viva, but these guys aren't too bad, it's not all-reggeaton, which I was fearing. If your into it, they do it right. (You were right David!)

JACK: (B-) They do what they do better than anybody. They are the standard in Variety Hits and occasionally they surprise you. LIKE RIGHT NOW -- PAT BENATAR, Awesome! Totally Awesome!!!

PASION: (D) Todas las canciones que yo no pude resistir en los ochentas. TRANSLATION: All the spanish slow jams I hated in the eighties. My papi loves it. Now that MAGIC 104.3 ain't around, this is all he listens to. Number one amongst middle aged Cubans!

O.K. Your turn. AND DON"T TEAR ME UP TOO BAD. Were all friends here.

Q101 shouldn't add more new....in fact there shouldn't be new on there. The new stuff and the classic alternative target 2 different demos....new stuff is bad news.
______________

I think they have enough new stuff. New Rock that comes out is HORRIBLE! OH MY GOD! They should stick to what they have. I like Q101 now. I also noticed they stopped playing that really wierd 80s stuff. Good call on their part. Some of those artists were really bad! They have definitly tweaked the station, since they started shuffling!

Yeah, am I the only one that can not look at the NineFM website? I go to ninechicago.com, 9chicago.com, and weplayanything.com....nothing on either three! Well, except weplayanything.com, "Welcome to the weplayanything.com test page!" something like that.

Last week we got an opportunity to check out a test site that they were still working on. I guess when they found out we knew about it, they took it down.

It looked good, I'm sure it will be ready in the next few weeks, remember, they are still unpacking the music library!

You can still see it. You just have to type in more of the address.

The webstream now works. The window for the webstream is crap, but it works.

http://www.weplayanything.com/ninefm_player.html

The window pops up to click dialup or high speed.
Edited by dave73 on 09/15/05 06:00 PM.

Wow! The stream is awesome, seeing that I clearly can't hear Nine FM where I am. Nine easily beats the Variety Hits knockoff/disaster out here where I am (WMKK), of which I have already trashed many times in the past.

The Nine FM stream is a feed of 99.9 WRZA. The stream is a little bizarre as of how it's working. The stream played "Key Largo" by Bertie Higgins during a commercial break, then, as that song completely ended, an odd-sounding promo for 99.9 played, identifying Joliet, Orland Park, and Chicago, although it did not mention the calls (WRZA) nor the COL of Park Forest. The stream then went abruptly (and midway) into Scandal ft. Patty Smythe's "The Warrior". At the top of the hour, the real WRZA legal ID played.

Seeing that the Nine FM site is about to go live, perhaps they can get started on the WCPT website. (Not sure that many people would believe the "unpacking the music library" line for that station).

EDIT: Oops. The COL of WRZA is Park Forest, not Lake Forest.
Edited by JustinT on 09/16/05 01:12 AM.

Radio Report Cards
lets see

560 WIND F (Sorry. They bashed my religion (Catholic), and pretty much everything else that applies to me and people close to me)

580 WILL A (Decent public radio programming)

670 WSCR D

720 WGN A

750 WNDZ B- (Good for ethnic programming as well as the occational rerun of Personal Achevement Radio)

780 WBBM A- (I don't like their weather but everything else is good)

820 WAIT B (Relevent Radio isn't too bad)

850 WCPT A+ (They're running Air America really smoothly. I don't agree with a lot of stuff that they talk about but its always good to have a second opinion)

890 WLS A

930 WAUR (Whats on there now? I haven't stopped there in awhile)

950 WNTD

1000 WMVP B (ESPN is always my first stop for sports talk)

1030 WNVR B (Good Polish programming)

1050 WLIP A+ (Great ABC Oldies Radio from Kenosha. Not really Chicago market but covers parts of the area)

1110 WMBI

1160 WYLL B (I like the satellite CCM that WYLL has been running overnights since it was on 106.7.)

1200 WRTO

1220 WKRS C (They really have issues over there. The local news/info and Lenny Palmer is good but at night they get way to syndicated and sometimes they just run dead air all night)

1240 WSBC

1300 WRDZ A+ (I've loved Radio Disney since it first came on WTAQ in 1998)

1330 WKTA C (Good for Rebel Radio and Korean stuff)

1390 WGRB A (GREAT place for Gospel.)

1410 WRMN B (Too much brokered stuff. Elgin Broadcasting Company pimp their stations too much)

1430 WEEF B (Good Ethnic stuff)

1480 WFXW errrr WSPY B (Are they ever gonna build a new tower site?)

1500 WPJX A (Good oldies and classic country music.)

1530 WJJG B

1590 WONX

1600 WMCW C (They really need to put the local programming back on 1600. It feels like something is missing when I turn on 1600)

1610 TIS A (Love the computer voices on 1610 and 530. Very helpful traffic info when driving through the Chicago area)

1690 WRLL B (B for the IBOC yuckiness)

92.3 WPWX C (C for the crappy audio quality from the IBOC.)

92.7 WKIE A+ (Nine has a great variety.)

93.1 WXRT A (Great AAA)

93.9 WLIT B (B for crappy sound quality.)

94.3 WJKL A (Great CCM)

94.7 WZZN A (Great Active Rock)

95.5 WNUA A (Good Smooth Jazz)

95.9 WERV A+ (LOVE The River)

96.3 WBBM F (YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYUCK. Terrible sound quality ear bleeding. Horrid airstaff.)

97.1 WDRV A (Good Classic Hits Music. Kinda sleepy imaging but good music)

97.9 WLUP C (OK Classic Rock)

98.7 WFMT A (Good Classical)

99.5 WUSN A (Great Country)

100.3 WILV A+ (LOVE Love FM's mix of Soft AC and Rhythmic AC)

101.1 WKQX A (I like the classics. They could play a few more currents though)

101.9 WTMX A (I like the newer sound. Dump the Jack and it'll be an A+)

102.3 WXLC B (B for poopy sound quality. Otherwise A+)

102.7 WVAZ B (Good Urban AC)

103.1 WVIV A (Good HUrban)

103.5 WKSC B- (Poopy sound quality. Bring back the reverb! Its not the same without it)

103.9 WWYW A+ (Really good format)

104.3 WJMK D- (Bland. Boring. Poopy Sound Quality. Probably the worst sounding of all the Jack FMs I have heard.)

105.1 WOJO (They got really good processing)

105.5 WZSR A (Nice AC)

105.9 WCKG D (Loveline is all its good for)

106.7 WPPN D (Boring)

107.5 WGCI A (Gotta love WGCI)

C; I don't agree with their politics, but more importantly, the station is all syndicated with almost no local connection. Props to them, though, on their "Liberals hate it" billboard campaign which, while divisive, aims right at their core audience.
>
> 670 WSCR D
D; If hot-dog vendor Mike North is your morning show figurehead, you've got problems
>
> 720 WGN A
B; Nick DiGiglio deserves more air time than Kathy and Judy.

> 780 WBBM A- (I don't like their weather but everything else
> is good)
B-; I'd have more respect for a "Newsradio" station that didn't have to kill ~7 hours a week with Bears games because McCaskey doesn't want them on WSCR and Infinity doesn't want them going to WGN or WMVP. So much for "All News."
>
> 820 WAIT B (Relevent Radio isn't too bad)
D; See WIND above, and I drop the station a letter because it's only playing this programming because Relevant is paying for it, which doesn't even pretend to serve the community.
>
> 850 WCPT A+ (They're running Air America really smoothly. I
> don't agree with a lot of stuff that they talk about but its
> always good to have a second opinion)
B+; It's good to have Air America back in Chicago, but the automation is a problem at times. I wish Newsweb would swap this with Relevant on 820, especially with an 820 night signal happening, but it's not going to happen, unfortunately.
>
> 890 WLS A
B+; A great talk station, but letting Jay Marvin go was a sign that they're pushing more towards the right (Eileen Byrne is almost as insufferable as Terri O'Brien these days.) Still, Roe Conn has an entertaining show and David Jennings (the token liberal,) Deborah Rowe and Bruce DuMont are good reasons to tune in.
>
> 1000 WMVP B (ESPN is always my first stop for sports talk)
B; I'm not a big fan of sports radio, but from my experience, MVP is better than SCR. Plus, no Mike North!
>
> 1160 WYLL B (I like the satellite CCM that WYLL has been
> running overnights since it was on 106.7.)
D; see WIND above, and I drop WYLL a grade because their personalities are more judgemental and less logical than those on WIND.
>
> 1390 WGRB A (GREAT place for Gospel.)
C; For a Chicago station, their imaging sounds terrible.
>
> 1690 WRLL B (B for the IBOC yuckiness)
B+; Good oldies, good personalities, horrible signal. Clear Channel should put it on 1390.
>
> 92.3 WPWX C (C for the crappy audio quality from the IBOC.)
D+; Crawford has screwed with the personalities to the point that they're no longer personalities.
>
> 92.7 WKIE A+ (Nine has a great variety.)
B+; Better than Jack, but still sounds like a Hot AC-wannabe much of the time.
>
> 93.1 WXRT A (Great AAA)
B; Great for soccer moms who want to stay "cool" but a shell of its former self.
>
> 93.9 WLIT B (B for crappy sound quality.)
A-; A generally fun Hot AC station, and the Flashback weekends are a nice change of pace.
>
> 94.7 WZZN A (Great Active Rock)
B-; They're still finding themselves after all these years; pick a format and stick with it!
>
> 95.5 WNUA A (Good Smooth Jazz)
C+; John Mayer, Norah Jones and Alicia Keys are not Smooth Jazz.
>
> 96.3 WBBM F (YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYUCK. Terrible sound quality ear
> bleeding. Horrid airstaff.)
F; Agreed. Bad personalities, bad music.
>
> 97.1 WDRV A (Good Classic Hits Music. Kinda sleepy imaging
> but good music)
B; Music fluctuates between great and (occasionally) bad, and the imaging sounds lazy.
>
> 97.9 WLUP C (OK Classic Rock)
C+; Unfortunately, the closest thing we have to Classic Rock right now.
>
> 98.7 WFMT A (Good Classical)
>
> 100.3 WILV A+ (LOVE Love FM's mix of Soft AC and Rhythmic
> AC)
C-; Soft AC music wrapped in heavy Urban AC imaging is disconcerting, to say the least. I understand what they're trying to do, but it's too half-baked.
>
> 101.1 WKQX A (I like the classics. They could play a few
> more currents though)
A-; Agreed, though I think their mix is fine as it is. I'd give them an A+ if they dumped Mancow, though that's not going to happen.
>
> 101.9 WTMX A (I like the newer sound. Dump the Jack and
> it'll be an A+)
B-; The music is so hit-or-miss and Eric and Kathy are posssibly the most inane morning show on Chicago radio.
>
> 102.7 WVAZ B (Good Urban AC)
A; V103 is almost a perfect marriage of imaging, music and personality.
>
> 103.5 WKSC B- (Poopy sound quality. Bring back the reverb!
> Its not the same without it)
C-; Cookie-cutter Clear Channel radio. The personalities are predictable, but the music has gotten better over the past few months.
>
> 104.3 WJMK D- (Bland. Boring. Poopy Sound Quality. Probably
> the worst sounding of all the Jack FMs I have heard.)
>
D-; I agree with you again.
>
> 105.5 WZSR A (Nice AC)
C; A so-so AC. Hopefully it can improve with a consistent airstaff and program director.
>
> 105.9 WCKG D (Loveline is all its good for)
D; Once again, I agree with you.
>
> 107.5 WGCI A (Gotta love WGCI)
B-; Nothing special or unique here; it looks good compared to Power 92, but that's not saying much.
