Radio Reunion: Perfect

Not a dupe thread: How about next year! A beautiful job, Rowdy. It was so great to see all my old friends hug all their old friends.I even got a hug too. Hearing stories of the 60s and 70s was perfect! Hearing an old story about when radio was really fun was great. Thanks, Leslie and Andy too. So next summer again, right?

Ditto to everything Michael says. I can't remember when I've had as much fun. Visiting with and hugging a bunch of old buddies just can't be described in words. Imagine that. A radio guy at a loss for words.

It was just amazing how many people turned out, and how far back in history a lot of us go.

I learned one important fact about my own longevity here. I'm not the record holder. I thought I was till RB McIntire told me he's been in Houston radio since 1967, which by my lousy 3rd grade 'rithmetic adds up to 41 years.

Hats off to RB and everybody else from the mists of history who made it to Tin Hall, and a salute to Rowdy,
Andy, Leslie and everybody else who made this incredible event happen.

Let's do it again sometime.

What a treat it really was, so many people I've not seen in decades. The hard part was recognzing anyone. So glad you had name tags! I hope you can make this an annual. Rowdy and everyone you just did a super job. Had to have been a lot of work but I know your hard wori was appreciated by all.

yep, yep yep. it was sooo much fun! loved seeing everyone. thanks rowdy, leslie, kevin, andy and all. i'm with shiloh, same time, next year!

Iwill add my thanks to everyone who showed up... the turn out was overwhelming. I looked back at the RSVP list this morning and counted over 100 names of people I recall visiting with yesterday...even if it was only for a moment or so to say hi... love your work... or whatever.

I hope everyone took the time or will take the time to thank the folks who run Tin Hall for donating the use of the facility... and they kept the cost of a beer reasonable at the same time. The food was excellent so keep an eye out for the Lighthouse Charity Cookers in future events and public service announcements.

I got a note this morning from the photographer, Steven David who says the photos are now online and available for free download at www.HoustonEventPhotos.com

Videos will soon be available (after some editing) from Metro Video Services. Contact Tim Bristow to get yours. You'll find contact information for Tim on his new website at www.mvsllc.net

How do you top that?

It looks like we had about 400 attendees by 4:30, and over 300 cars in the parking lot. The photos look great and the video should be impressive too.

The gray in my beard really shows up when using flash photography, and it has to be a two way tie between Larry Galla and Jim Carola as to who has preserved themselves better without the aid of surgery or formaldehyde.

Yes, it was true that Colonel St. James was laid out on the floor. But it was not a fist or a fifth that got him there. A back spasm was the culprit, and he was fine in a few minutes.

Over the next week or so I am going to follow up with folks and their offers for help on a permanent web site, etc.

I also want to party with Tom Corbett's wife and his ex wife.

Thanks for coming!

Great job Josh, that was a once in a life time opportunity. I saw HOT 95-7's Dave Morales hanging out with Paul Christi. One generation meeting an other.

Bill Ingram here... It was a great reunion. Many thanks to Rowdy, Andy, Leslie, Kevin, and everyone else that played a part in making this happen.

It had to be a huge undertaking, with a lot of man and woman hours, putting this together.

It was so good to see everyone again, like many others have said already, I hope we can do this again next summer.

Without a doubt, the most fun I've had with my clothes on in some time! Next year maybe we need to do six hours instead of just four...it went way too fast.

Josh, Andy, Leslie and all, I agree with Shilo (first time for everything) it WAS perfect. Thanks again for pulling it together.

Even though Corporate BS has screwed up the industry I can't help but feel good about leaving the business to you younguns. Fine job indeed. This old guy respects your work and your efforts on the air and in making this great day happen.

Mike

A great BIG THANK YOU to each and every person that attended. YOU are what made this event a success. Without YOU there, the event wouldn't have been as good or as successful.

We're looking at doing this every couple of years (instead of every year). What are your thoughts on that? What are your thoughts on having a monthly, or quarterly, luncheon at some local eatery?

I wish I could have stayed longer. I got to hug ALMOST everyone on my hug list - I think I hugged some folks 3 or 4 times and that wasn't enough.

I've had some of you ask about putting your personal photos from the event on the blog. I'll be happy to help you with that. Paul Christy has already asked about posting his video.

[email protected] is how to reach me.

I have no intention of taking the blog down. I'll be happy to continue to help you post your stories, pictures, whatever you want. It's a free website and even though I'm not Pixar I can still get just about everything we need on it.

If there's interest in a monthly luncheon or happy hour or whatever, I'll be happy to use the newsletter many of you signed up for to get that word out. That way it won't be posted here or on the blog and will be a private announcement only to those who are authentic Houston radio folks.

And as I told Rowdy; when we're ready to start talking about next year, I'm there.

Only this time if KILT won't let me off to stay the whole time...I'll really have Life After Radio!

WOW!! What a wonderful day! A perfect party! One not to be spoiled even with my damn back pain. It was so nice to see old friends, and make so many new ones. I even got to meet Chuck Dunaway, and use the "I used to listen to you when I was a kid." line on him for a change. I never had to wait for a drink, and was even given a much needed muscle relaxer. And no, I didn't drive home. The Tin Hall folks were incredible. A perfect venue. Thanks so much Rowdy, Andy, Leslie T., and Kevin. You guys have every right to be proud for a job well done. See ya next time!!

Of course you didn't. You flew home! However, since you are a Colonel in the AIR Corp, you get to do that. It was good seeing you. It has been a long time.

I even got to meet Chuck Dunaway, and use the "I used to listen to you when I was a kid." line on him for a change.

I got a chance to use that line with Arch Yancey, and I went you one better. I grew up in Pasadena in the late 50s listening to Arch jocking records on KNUZ, and seeing him as the special guest DJ and emcee at some school dances and talent shows.

Ten years later, in the late 60s, I went to work at KIKK in Pasadena and had the huge pleasure and privilege of working with Arch. Working with Bill Bailey, Joe Ladd andRichard Dobbyn (sound of horses whinnying in the distance) was an experience.

And yesterday I saw Arch, Bill and Joe for the first time since 1969 and damn they look good. A lot better than me.

And for Andy W and Rowdy, I think a big event like this every couple of years would be fantastic. It might get old if done every year. I also vote for holding smaller "reunion mixers" every couple of months at a water hole we can all agree on. It would give us all a chance to visit with some of the people we didn't get around to visiting with yesterday.

The Radio Reunion was REALLY GREAT!!!! It was a treat seeing all those faces I have not laid eyes upon in so many years! We have all gotten a bit "mature" - but that beats the heck out of the alternative - right!!? I did not get a chance to chat with everyone I wanted too, but really enjoyed the time I had.

Yes - Let's do this again, or go for the more frequent get together at a local watering hole.

Thanks so much to all of you who worked so hard to make it happen!

Andy W. - Thanks for making me aware of the event! You are one of my favorite people!

Rowdy - Tom Corbett's Ex here... WHAT You don't even know my name - just "Tom Corbett's Ex Wife"? What, were you raised in a barn for Pete's sake. Awww - never mind... - I am always up for a party! A couple of cold beers and straight shots and we'll be old friends in the making!

Good Work !!!!! GREAT PARTY !!!!!

Jim, it was a pleasure meeting and speaking with you. There was a lot of folks and it seemed not enough time to get to everyone. It was like old times talking to Karen Johnston with whom I worked with at KNUZ. Karen Christie, I briefly met you while you were speaking to Bill Ingram. You were on the opposite side of the table where my wife and I were sitting.

Walt (KQUE) mentioned about having the name tags helping determine who was who. After all, some of us do appear different after all these years. Although, my wife's name tag read Mary Tiller, she was approached by someone who called her Maria. It turned out she thought Mary was Maria Todd. We had a good laugh about that.

The whole reunion idea was great and we all had a wonderful time. Damn, that gumbo was good wasn't it?

The pleasure was mine Chuck. My own circle of friends has grown just by my hanging around on this website for the past year or two, and even though you and I never worked together, I felt like we'd known each other for years.

How about that Karen Christie? The only person in the room who looks as spectacular as she did 20 years ago. Karen seeing you looking so great made up for how bad the rest of us looked. You were worth the drive all the way out to Tin Hall. I want what some of what you were having.

;) you guys are too kind! You know how it works - just good clean living! (Filtered cig's and neat drinks!)

Part of the fun yesterday was meeting the people I have heard of for years, but never met before. And I had the pleasure of chatting with quite a few of you I previously knew in name only!

It was indeed a highlight in my year!

The minute we got into the lot, we knew this was something special. Ok...Lets see: See if this sounds like your experience.... especially if you're a utility player, like some of us. . .

1. Saw at least 2 guys who have fired me, and we're still close anyway.

2. 6 or so folks I havent seen in 20+ years, including my first PD, & giver of fatherly advice. In fact, saw
at least 5 figures who have shaped my mind.

3. About 6 people who,,, we've spoken to by phone, but never seen their face. Boy did you look different than you sound.

4. At least 10 I've never met in person, but heard as a kid.

5. Saw 2 guys I thought were dead.... and one who should get a special "Keith Richard" longevity award.

6. Missed over a dozen good friends, and former co-workers who will likely just come over anyway, pop a top, & say hi, since Mrs. & I live right over "here."

7. Got a special kick out of Paul Christy's arrival. Was also highly impressed by about 4 sets of folks who you must have wondered if they would kick each other's teeth, and instead were completely nice, some even posing for pics together.

8. 3 who I've had to sleep @ their house (not with them!) (yuck!) or who've slept on my couch during the wilder, leaner days.

9. Got within 10 feet of Joe Ladd, (see #4) and was entangled already with people I love, and STILL havent had the great privilege of meeting.

10. Saw one of my favorite people in the world, who can work cramped with you 3 ft away in a bucket of bolts, and never hear a discouraging word... You look great on tv, btw. Keep rockin.

11. Where were you? : Kelly Ryan (had to work, again!!?.) Lisa Mannevelli, FONTAINE! (Damn, man--- my wife thinks I'm lying about your existence. You're an urban legend.) See #6.

12. Saw just 1 enemy, and they have so many other combatants besides me, dont think I even crossed the radar.

13. I'll bet you saw someone who you've seen severely drunk/ hungover back in the day? Remember to forgive those who puke in your house/ car/ station van/ or helicopter. (no, not me)

14. Didnt Barry Kaye look great?

Does all this sound familiar. I dont know, but I just think its kind of a small world here, especially for jocks/anchors.

Enjoyed the stories. Sorry, forgot to sit quietly in the corner. Rowdy, Kevin, Gang, I dont know why it didnt sound like my kind of thing at first, but it was a blast. The Names were clearly having fun. We supporting casters had a great time also. Good food/ good drinks too! Whew! Thanks everyone.
