Radio Reunion

For those who have worked as disc jockeys at the radio stations around central Alabama, I hope you will tune in to our "Radio Reunion" on WACV-AM 1170 in Montgomery (www.1170wacv.com for streaming audio) Saturday morning from 8:30-11:00.

Anyone who grew up in this part of the state knows about the legendary WBAM radio. It was a clear channel station that covered over 90 counties in Alabama, Georgia, and Florida, and could be heard everywhere. There used to be Big BAM shows in Montgomery at the Garrett Coliseum, where you could spend $4.00 to see 6 or 8 of the biggest top 40 hitmakers around at the time.

This week, we have as our guests Bill J. Moody, Jerry Carpenter, Kim Wanous, Don Darby, George Landry, Joe Marcus, Sandie Barnette, Clay Redden, and Kris O'Kelly. Next week (July 22), we are reuniting the most famous morning show crew of all time, Larry Stevens, Rusty Aldridge and Leslie Bailey, along with others who worked with them in the past at WHHY, WBAM, WMXS, WQLD, etc.

For those of you out there who remember, I hope you'll tune in. We are getting a lot of positive media coverage on this event from The Montgomery Advertiser and WNCF-TV...it would be great if you were able to listen and partcipate as well.

I really enjoyed the WACV Montgomery Radio Reunion show! I listened via the internet in the Atlanta area. I grew up in Selma and hearing Joe Marcus, Bill J. Moody, Jerry Carpenter and the others you had there, as well as those great old airchecks, jingles etc really brought back some memories! I’m a radio nut. Though I have always worked primarily in television, I’ve dabbled a little in radio in your area, as well as other markets around Alabama. It was a fun show to listen to, even though there were a few little technical glitches. Just one thing…I think you need to add a little processing to the internet stream to help even out the levels.

Different subject: I know almost nothing about Bluewater Broadcasting other than what I’ve read on “Radio-Info”…and I know to take much of what I read with a grain of salt. I am in or passing through Montgomery several times a year. It seems Bluewater is putting more effort into WACV than it has seen in years. Daring to be a little different by doing music on AM. Also, local personalities in mornings and afternoons. Cool! 1170 is about the only thing on the AM dial in Montgomery that makes it worth even trying AM in the area. I know you have some FM signals too…96.1 and 98.9 and I believe 97.9 was mentioned as well. Can’t say I’ve listened to any of them much, the formats just aren’t to my liking. But it sounds like you’re making a serious run at WLWI; that tells me you’re doing something very right on FM too…and maybe WLWI/Cumulus is doing something very wrong. Does Bluewater own stations in any other markets? The little bit I’ve heard, it seems you’re doing a much better job than Clear Channel or Cumulus. My mother lives down in Jackson, AL. I thought you might be interested in knowing that I can get WACV down there day and night. It’s weak, but there and identifiable. She must be in one of the lobes of the nighttime pattern. Since you're running music on 1170, how about adding C-QUAM? Would sound great!

Keep up the good work.

Thank you for listening. There's a great article in today's Montgomery Advertiser if you are interested in seeing the pictures from yesterday:

Yes, I am aware of the glitches...I recorded the webstream and there are parts where it is so over-driven...we had a lot of microphone sharing so the levels were not consistent...next week, when we have Larry Stevens and his crew on, it will hopefully be fixed. But a little audio processing would probably do the job.

As far as your comments about Bluewater...since I just got there a couple of months ago (and have a "real job" as a school band director in nearby Tallassee), all I can say are positive things. There's not a person in that facility who hasn't been 100% supportive of this very old-fashioned show. Terry Barber, the General Manager, and Rick Peters, the Owner, both wanted to go local on WACV, and it seems to be working. We are getting tons of calls on Saturday morning just talking about yard sales, the police blotter, and having guests on.

Bluewater is just in Montgomery, as far as I know. Peters is originally from south Florida, and Barber is originally from Mississippi, but they have been in Alabama for many years now, specifically this market. And I've read the stuff on this board and the old one...people like to be a 'bad-a$$' in cyberspace about different things, so you're right, you have to take what is said with a big ol' grain of salt.

Since you're interested in reading about the other stations, you might like to try the websites. And before someone out there starts attacking me for promoting a station, just remember - take it easy. I'm a school teacher, OK?

That was a great show. A fun time. That was the first morning show that I sat and listened to all the way through in a long time, including my own. Thanks, Michael, for bringing those three together with Dan Atkinson. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Thank you for calling in, as well.

It sure was fun having that group together this morning. I didn't think we could top the Big BAM/WCOV reunion, but we came close with the WHHY crowd...certainly for people of a certain generation (mine), Larry Stevens is like THE MAN when it comes to morning radio. Honestly, I probably have heard that voice more in my lifetime than anyone else's! Many others could say the same.

The best part is that they really seemed to enjoy it. The old patter, the rhythm, the jokes, the quick humor...it was all in evidence, and the good news is that they are willing to return at a later date.

After a marriage counseling show next week (not I, but some local marriage counselors), we will finally get Doc Kirby from WTBF on the show to discuss his mission trip to Cuba. It should be interesting, and for those of us out there who have worked for Doc through the years, a fun show to hear.

Photos are up from both radio reunions at 1170wacv.com just click on the saturday morning show link on the left side just above the listen live link
