Radio Revolution-The Big 8

I watched an edited version of The Radio Revolution-The Big 8 CKLW and really enjoyed it. This documentary really got down to why CKLW was a success and why CKLW failed years later.

There were some very unique and gifted people BEHIND THE SCENES at CKLW. The jocks there were good, but good jocks can be bought and brought in for the right price. There is not enough money to buy some of the other talent that worked at CKLW from around 1967-1979.

There is one DVD on ebay.

Hello All:

I was fortunate enough to work at "The Big 8" in 1970 as a board op.

Here is an excellent CKLW tribute site:

I encourage you to buy the DVD directly from the producer. The Radio Revolution DVD can be purchased from:

It is an excellent story and should be considered mandatory viewing by all radio people ... the attitude of success is what made CKLW such a great station in its day, and the attitude is timeless. As someone on the DVD said "you knew when you walked into that station, you were going to kick some serious radio ass that day."

The DVD also contains some other short segments which are a bonus. I really liked the section regarding Paul Drew ... an amazing man who had the ability to make your ego soar when he complimented you on a job well done, or rip your heart out when he tore into you. I'll never forget saying "Good morning Mr. Drew" to him one day as I passed him in the hall, and he ripped into me for about 5 minutes telling me how someone of my social standing in the radio station had no right to speak to him unsolicited ... what a guy! Must have been a hard night for him.

Regards to all,
Lee Smith

I thought, when watching, that there were some people there who were geniouses. The very best at what they did. Not in Detroit but anywhere. They lifted the station to what we know now as a legendary station in radio history.

It is kind of like one of those legendary sports teams that has three or four of the best players of all time on their roster at one time. No opponent has a chance and they rewrite the record books. That was CKLW.
