Radio Road-Gastonia

I was fueling my car at 321 & Radio Rd in Gastonia yesterday. Within view was a building and behind it a telephone pole with what appeared to be old STL antennae mounted on it. They were pointed in the direction of Crowders Mtn. Is this the former home of the old 101.9? Or another station? I assume there was a radio station here given the Radio Rd name? Did they have an AM partner?

> Is this the former home of the old 101.9?

I believe you are correct there.

> Did they have an AM partner?

Yes. The original station on this site was WGNC 1450. It still exists, as part of the "Carolina Superstation"

101.9 was originally known as WGNC-FM, and was simulcast with the AM until the late 70's, when it launched separate programming with A/C as "FM-102". Later, they changed the calls to WZXI. When WBT-FM dropped Beautiful Music to become WBCY, WZXI picked up the format for a couple of years.

They later changed to the old "Transtar 41" format and changed the calls to WLIT. Those calls were short-lived, as the owners (Beasley) took the station CHR with the calls WCKZ and the monicker "Kiss-102".

The rest I think you know.

More on WZXI

WZXI 101.9 also signed up to carry the ABC Superadio satellite network which was supposed to launch when WABC gave up music for talk. The network never got off the ground, I don't think they could get enough affiliates to launch. The whole idea was scrapped.

I think many of the WABC jocks were set to be on the network, too bad it didn't happen it might have been interesting. I for one would have enjoyed hearing Dan Ingram.
