Radio Shack To Become The Shack

It truly is over for radio as Radio Shack gradually drops Radio from its logo. Will the last d-j hit ctrl alt del and turn out the lights.

While they are embracing change, they ought to just go for the entire future of the company and flip over to Brokeback Shack.

Perhaps William Young, the author of the book The Shack, should consider suing to force them to change their name, like Radio Shack forced the auto parts chain Auto Shack to change their name to Auto Zone claiming they had exclusive rights to the word "Shack." ::)

Yeah, that was ridiculous, wasn't it? ::)

Of course, if anything, Radio Shack would force him to change the name of his book! ::)

It's also ridiculous that Radio Shack thinks (or thought) that anyone would confuse them with Auto Shack/Zone. Maybe Auto Zone could sue 104.5 over the "Zone" name? ;D

They've been Calling themselves The Shack For a good little while now.
But all their merchandise and Website still have Radio Shack On them.
"The Shack" is just for promotions I think.

[/quote]Well, Auto Zone did threaten to sue the State of Tennessee over the name of their Driver's Education program "In The Zone", claiming that Auto Zone had a copyright on the phrase "In the Zone". The state was forced to change the name of their program to "Between the Barrels".

Radio Shack was truly granted a tradename copyright on the name "shack" as used for a retail store. It grants them legal right to be the only store using "shack" in it's name. This would never be approved today, but what's done is done, and long done.

Radio Shack was prominently displayed during Tour de France interwiew with Lance Armstrong. Since this is Armstrong's final Tour maybe RS thinks it a good time to change names.

Hey radio30? Can we just call ya "30?"

Sadly, I think we all see the necessity to remove the "radio" part from the shack. It's outdated and not real hip. But, I dunno if, from a business stance, it's going to keep them in business.

May not matter. Word on the street is that Best Buy is buying the SHNACK and re branding it under their name. Ya heard it hear first. Just think of the real estate they pick up with a scaled down Best Buy.

Nock

Good point... and "radio shack" is a ham and shipboard operator term. How many people know that any more... or care?

may be just as well if they go the way of buggy whips...last time i went in one and asked for a 1/4 inch phone plug..they guy gave me a 20 foot phone cord. i explained what i wanted and he just stood there..i then drew a picture on what i wanted he said oh..those things are in a drawer over here..but thats not what they're called..he pulled one out in a radio shack bag and it said "1/4 inch phone plug"..i had to explain that years ago before ipods and color tv..they were used to connect phone lines at switchboards.."whats a switch board"..my answer 'do you take debit cards"...seriously the radio hobbiest's that frequented radio shacks over the years im sure have greatly diminished and i cant see a lot of people buying pc's, cells phones. and all the other overpriced toys they stocked..

I'll share my Radio Shack almost employment story. The process for applying for a Radio Shack job includes an online 100 plus question personality analysis. Besides repeating the questions there was this gem, "Do you know how to read?". After that there was basic math and retailing 101 followed by giving them permission to check my financial past and taste my urine for evil substances.

I received a call from the store manager and interviewed for an assistant manager position. The first shock was the pay, $7.75/hour plus a small sales commission (circa 2007 and yes an assistant manager position). But the manager pointed out the potential revenue pushing cell phones, credit cards and other annoyances for customers. My background includes many years in radio, sound engineering and the audio/visual/presentation/convention business. The manager, who was a hospital orderly prior to this job, chastises me for not using Monster Cable in my tech work; I bit my tongue during the interview. Then the manager shared his knowledge on the reason why VCR (not VHS) beat Beta in the marketplace. It was because George Lucas released Star Wars on VCR. I respectively pointed out that it was due to owner of the VHS format (JVC) willingness to license the technology as opposed to Sony, owner of the Beta format, who licensed to just a few manufactures. The manger then said, "That might have something to do with it, but the fact George Lucas released Star Wars on VCR was the real reason. Needless to say for preservation of sanity I didn't take the job.

Unless I'm in a pinch, Radio Shack is no longer on my radar. If I have time there is always MCM Electronics and other on line sources that offer next day or two day delivery.

Thank goodness for http://www.radioshackcatalog.com/

LMAOFFF... yea..ive had interviews where the mgr was a total dumba$$..really makes me wonder if he was the best they had to choose from for management..what the hell did they turn down..??? other than years in radio my checkered past includes studio engineering, repair, troubleshooting, music instrument setup and repair, live sound re-inforcement, live band gigs, frontman, audio engineering...pretty much everything that is useless in todays market place...not to mention the dj of the year thing and a gold record..lol...no money..but the memories are priceless...

Sure Tibbs, just calling me "30" would be fine. I've surely been called much worse and probably will be again.

My screen name comes from the nearly 30 years I was in the business full-time before getting out in 2005.

All I do concerning radio now is commercials and voice tracking as a sideline.

Did have lots of fun in those years before all the changes.

"30"
