I probably wouln't trust any their on shelf components to run in a transmitter installation that will be running 24/7.Like a 7805 or a 7812 3 lead regulators.Back then .probably yes.today no.If you lucky to find any parts at the Shack now.
If I had to sum up the quality of parts from Radio Shack, I'd look at one simple item: RG58 coax. Strip a piece of their off the shelf stuff and you can almost count the strands in the shield on one hand. Very, very cheap junk indeed.
Hamfests still garner some good stuff you can actually put your hands on before you buy it.

Please, please, please! Do not turn this thread into one of those political shouting matches. Both of you are probably GREAT engineers, but I wouldn't hire either one of you to advise me on tax policy for my company... (if I had one. ;D )
Politics by nature is an argument or attack aimed at individuals. Usually formed around an opinion and never fully explained. Normally starts with emotional shouts like this, with exclamation points.
Let me tell you about trash bags. School had been selling them and making money for the school. Because the State decided to look into it they decided we had not properly inventoried the bags . Big school moneymaker became a mess and had to be dropped. This was one school and 60 boxes of trash bags normally kept in stock. Now they bags are ordered on the internet. Because the bags are not visible and in stock the sales are dismal.
Nuts and Bolts. A local company has inventory of nuts and bolts good for the use of a local hardware store. Taxes each year on the inventory is $40,000. Sold because the inventory tax is too much to continue business. Inventory has been reduced and the parts aren't always there.
I am involved with churches that can't get tax breaks on personal or real property. They don't operate as a for profit corporation.
We have lost RCA, Delco, and a host of businesses, because the taxes here are too much to handle, on their inventory. Property...real and personal...is being taxed at an excessive rate. I would like to know how the view of taxes on inventory is flawed?
I love to go somewhere and buy something. I like to see it and touch it and make sure it is the right size and type before I pay money for it. I like to know I can come back if it smokes immediately because it wasn't rated for the value I use it for. Not a possibility when you order from the internet. The process makes our society and purchases impersonal. We are removing the life and the humanity in the process.
Having a business adds so many levels of forms and regulations it makes sense to move the plants to Mexico or China. Remove the US and remove workers. If we gripe about problems we need to know the root of the problem. Wake up and ask: How many products do we manufacture here? Another: Is our military structure and it's manufacturing all in house? Or you could just learn Spanish and Chinese and hope for the best.
