Radio Sputnik - DC's Kremlin Radio

I agree with you about CRI. I've not listened to their shortwave broadcasts in recent months, but for many years when I did listen from time to time, the English programming was frankly fairly boring, but not in a "dull Communist propaganda" way. There were lots of inane discussions of things like tipping and restaurant etiquette, internet dating, fashion trends, pop music. The aim seemed to be to put across an image of "hey, we Chinese are just like you" for whatever reason.
The Beijing Hour is probably the flagship show for CRI, or CGTN as the English output is now known. Sometimes some interesting content, but pretty dry. I imagine even NPR fans would find it boring. But vastly different from the bad old days of Radio Peking and it’s endless political harangues.

I‘ve only very occasionally listened to CGTN on shortwave since the Albania relay station was closed in 2019. The audio quality of the relays from Cuba is awful, along with much of what Radio Havana Cuba puts out, due to engineering incompetence and/or indifference. There are a few English transmissions direct from China that are audible in North America if you are willing to do some digging.

The EU Community just banned Russia Today (RT) and Radio Sputnik broadcast redistribution
I wonder if their London production facility will be locked up.

If you're going to get nitpicky about this, England was never a member. The United Kingdom was.

Or, you could post constructively and not pick stupid holes in people's posts instead. I respect your work, but you're losing the plot, Dave.
My mother's family, all from England, still call it that way. To them, the "UK" is for politicians trying to get the Scots to feel they are part of something...

Sorry if I offended you. I just wanted to give some accuracy, but it came off as pedantic.🥺

The European Commission President announced on Sunday that Sputnik and RT would be banned in the European Union for being a source of "toxic and harmful disinformation." Margarita Simonyan, Editor-in-Chief of RT and Sputnik, calls the European Commission's move an act against the freedom of speech that the Western countries value and said that the Russian outlets would find some other way to reach out to its audience in Western Europe.

As of 3/12 WZHF AM 1390 is still relaying Radio Sputnik English and their stream with the inserted "WZHF ID" remains alive. Of course, the Russians have bombed out of existence Radio Ukraine's main medium wave transmitter site. So much for "Freedom of Speech".

The URL is here: http://38.96.148.28:11884/index.html?sid=1

It has a whole five listeners at this hour...

Funny, the Shoutcast server offers up the "Playing now" content as "ID & DISCLAIMER READY"

Okay, points taken, but do you really want the US to be more like Russia, where we limit what sort of political speech can be broadcast on the airwaves?

Like others here have said, it's a slippery slope.

Back in the 1950's, during the McCarthy era, people literally did jail time for disseminating Communist literature in the US, because the CPUSA at that time actually called for the overthrow of the US government. Do we want to return to that?

How is selling airtime to Russia about free speech? Putin has the power of speech instead of the radio station. That makes the station into a puppet. A puppet can't claim free speech because a puppet is a puppet.

OK, Let's say you are on the air doing a talk show. Someone calls in to promote the local Ku Klux Klan. You slam the phone and cut him off.

Does that mean you infringed on his freedom of speech?

I can remember what was then Radio Peking reading from Mao's Little Red Book
As American citizens we were free to listen to Radio Havana, Radio Kiev, and Radio Moscow too. No secret police to fear. Moscow was broadcasting with high power on 600 KC. They came in quite well in the Midwest. But, that was from Cuba.

Radio Sputnik English service is no longer heard on Galaxy 19 Ku along with RT Engñish TV. The blockade does not impact yet Belarus so that country's TV channel, Belarus 24, is still available for viewing.

The link you posted still works though.
