RADIO STALKERS??????

Ok, next question I have for all you personalities out there...... How many of you have experienced "stalkers" and the like? Phoners, mailers, remote lurkers? Care to share? I have seen more than my share. And how do you rid yourself of these sick and strange individuals who obviously need some help????

Think they have always been there. Remember several ragged looking individuals in green raincoats stalking Jerry Williams on remotes. Probably harmless but...

I remember Kathy. Called all the time and somehow knew different things about people. She knew at the time I lived in Braintree thats where I lived. Thankfully the phone was not under my name. She would lurk at remotes and just be weird. She was harmless and I think lonley. That did not make it any less creepy.

There was one woman who would send us stuff. Handmade coffee cups and such. I would never eat the food she sent. Some other brave souls would eat it. Never had any "Play Misty for Me" types.

Yup, I've had one who continually called every show and tried to work a brain game on me, just to get her favorite songs played and have them dedicated to her. I knew what was up and it stopped fairly quickly. Then there's another one who a few months ago showed up at my door a few times, and it's been many years since I left terrestrial radio.

Did anyone "invite" the stalker in...I mean, strike up a friendship that you could not end--or end easily...

One guy I worked with married one of them

Not a good ending. :(

First Rule: Don't ever make them mad! Most of the time they are pretty harmless....until you get them mad. Rent "Play Misty for Me". In the movie, the stalker was a bit of a pest, but otherwise harmless...UNTIL he got her mad.

People who 'stalk' can be *compulsive*. Believe me, you would rather have them compulsive about how much they *like* you and your show. NOT compulsive about how *mean* you were to them... ;-)

Second Rule: If they are starting to get creepy, saying nasty things, sending picture of animals without their heads, calling your home, bothering your family. You NEED to know who they are! "Kathy" won't get you far if thats all you know about her.

Have her call you on a phone that has caller ID. Ask for her address and tell her you are going to send a CD or something.

If something bad happens....it would help to have some information on locating the stalker.

Otherwise, be nice when you can. Ignore when you can't or need to.

Used to run the board and screen calls ("produce") for a talk show.
This 30-something woman used to call the show, then she'd call back to talk to me, sometimes for an hour or more. The talk was very racy. Met her once. The chick with the hot voice turned out to look more like Ernest Borgnine in drag. But I wasn't rude, just made sure we stayed in a public place. Well, she called and called and called for almost a year til on day she just stopped calling. Never heard what happened.

Yes, I do remember Play Misty for Me. I was thinking more of the jocks that make "friends" with women on the phone and then want to end the friendship.

:p

I found that many of the "women" who stalked me were either coming out of a bad marriage or relationship?

When I did overnights (for a former AC station...and later, a country FM in Portland, Maine), I became the MR. FRIENDLY & COMPASSIONATE DJ. So you can imagine the types of women who would telephone during the early morning hours and 'bend my ear' about a no-good husband or b/f?

And yes...I also got propositioned a few times!

But I decided that it was in the best interest of my marriage...and later my relationship with the 'Girlfriend From Hell'...NOT to take advantage of the opportunities! ;)

argytunes.

We knew who she was and where she lived.
I had once talked to David Allen Boucher about her. He contacted me through some email exchanges and asked about her. She was spinning some tales to him. I gave him what I knew about her so he could be on his guard (not that he wasn’t, he was just a little more prepared.)

There was on girl who worked for the station, that despite what she said she was a Marty Stewart “groupie.” She would tell me stories of “These girls that were groupies” She would see them at a bunch of different shows. I asked her why she wasn’t a groupie if she was following the tour she would tell me she was no groupie that it was different.

So even “In house” guess we had a stalker.

Oh yeah there was the woman DJ who worked with me that got mad because I didn’t have the same feelings for her that she was having for me. That got a little scary at one point, she had the potential to be a Play Misty for Me.

Invited in? Well, actually, long before I realised she was a stalker, she invited me in. Well, maybe I shouldn't really call her a stalker, just someone who for some unknown reason likes me alot. More than is safe for my own health.

I tried to stalk Bradley J once, until I met him. His off-air persona is a very effective method of birth control, if you know what I mean.

I forget her name - anyone remember?

She wasn't a stalker, but would phone in with lottery numbers back in the 80's. She sounded old, with a gravelly voice. I heard she'd passed on. Every jock knew her..

can't remember her friggin' "handle" .. anyone?

Ah, yes....You're thinking of "The Gripper"!

God rest her soul.

Passed away...but quite a "Southie" character!

(With a vocabulary like a lumberjack!)

You win the thread!

Play Misty for Me is quite a hoot, especially Clint's "poetry" and the screams of a dying black woman. See kids, if you don't make love to your stalker a random maid is gonna die. Don't help murder random women, make love to your stalkers.
