What radio station names go good with branding the format that station has?Meaning what format goes good when giving the station a name that they will be branded as. Such as the name KISS that format is good for CHR stations, but wait not so fast KISS is also used on some Urban AC's.

Forgot to add some of those like The Ticket/Sports Ticket, The Zone, The Team. But never knew some sports stations were named The Ball, The Ump, The Bull, or The Sports Animal. To me those don't sound like good names for a sports stations. The Ball 760, The Ump 760, The Bull 760. I don't know about that.

Worst name for a talk station ever

"Chat Radio 1040"... ex-WJHR in Flemington, NJ, now WCHR. The billboards advertising the station lasted longer than the actual format did!

Every market has at least two of every name you mentioned. Most of them have become overused cliches signifying a lack of any real creativity.

What's the alternative? Hell if I know. Maybe,um... call letters?

I always thought BREEZY would make a good AC or Soft AC around these parts (Central Illinois where the wind blows 90% of the time - nothing to stop it!)

If any station did a Classic Jams format - rhythmic jams from the late 70s-90s and called it CJ-98 or whatever frequency.

Surf or the Ocean never made it into this vast list. Always liked Stations that link themselves to local Highways, like the Ventura Highway U.S. 101

Re: Worst name for a talk station ever

Hmmm. Until they went Spanish in May 2004, WXCT in Connecticut was a talk station going by the name "Exact Radio 990 The X". At the top of the hour "Exact News, Exact Weather, Exact Taffic, Exactly when you want it. WXCT Southington The All New 990 The X". The station manager told me that XCT is how you spell the word "exact" without vowels.

Today they are TalkRadio 990 - Central Connecticut's Talk Radio for Women, even though they carry a lot of non-gender specific programming. They also occasionally mention "Talk Raido for the X Chromosme".
 
Random Station Branding that aren't cookie cutter

WPLR 99.1 in New Haven, CT which plays a mix of Classic & New Rock just uses 99-1 PLR. They used to be 99 Rock.

WDRC 102.9 in Hartford, CT which is a Classic Hits Station goes by "Big Hits 102.9" and occasionally they still use the name DRC-FM.

WARL 1320 in Attleboro, MA/Providence Rhode Island is a sports station. They use "1320 The Drive". "1320 the Drive" was also the name of their former talk format.

There was a Contemporary Christian station outside of Boston, Mass. WJLT 1060. They used the name J-Light 1060.

When WXCT 990 in Connecticut first went Spanish in May 2004 they were known as SuperMax 990. When they cancelled that brokerage contract in July 2005 they went Spanish as POWER 990, even though there's a CC owned Hip-Hop Station in the market called POWER 104.1

Five Stations relgious stations including WFIF 1500 Milford, CT/760 WVNE Leominster, MA/1590 AM Providence/1320 WDER Derry, NH are known as "Life Changng Radio".

LaMega - WLAT 910 New Britain, CT. Spanish

LaPuertorquienmisima - WPRX 1120 Bristol, CT. Spanish.

Radio Formula or Radio Fortuna - WLIM 1580 Patchoge, Long Island. Spanish. (Polish Owned station lol)

Radio Popular - WACM 1490 West Springfield, MA. Spanish.

Poder 1110 - 1110 AM Providence, RI. Spanish.

La Brava. - Former slogan used on Spanish Stations in CT. First on WMMW 1470 in Meriden. Later on 990 WNTY in Southington.

Magia 980. - WSUB Groton, CT. Spanish.

SuperStation 740 or 740 Super Station. WNYH Huntington, Long Island. Oldies/Classic Country/Standards. (Intersesting mix of music. They're looking for advertiser support and also people to buy time to play the music or talk about their business and/or hobby).
