Radio Station in the Cedar Valley Flipping

Best wishes on your new format. I'm sure many people will enjoy hearing those songs again.

Who....in God's name.....is going to listen to a station playing "classic Christian rock"....not to mention "classic Christian rock" - IN AM!!!!!!! Good luck. My guess is that the station will go dark or change formats in less than 1 year.

Godspeed my brother. We'll ALL be praying for you and your bottom line.

The Stick

If you can honestly tell me that Classic Christian Rock on the AM dial is going to be a HUGE HIT in Waterloo and surrounding areas...then I will shut my mouth. That is all I was saying. "Who is going to listen to this?"

It would be like me coming on and saying that I had purchased a station in Mesquite, TX and was flipping the format to all German polkas and then had people on the board saying, "that's awesome!" and "great move, many people will listen!"

C'mon...I did wish the guy luck. This board seems to be turning into a stroke-fest and it makes me puke.

Hi jackd,

Wow, it is really great to hear the format flip of KWOF 850. Personally I think it is great to have some diversity on the airwaves, especially having a classic christian rock format. I very much look forward to that. There is so much contemporary music on the air, I wonder if anyone does remember the good old days of christian music. I still whip out my vinyl collection to hear some classic whiteheart, petra, stryper, whitecross, Mad at the World,Steve Taylor, etc. They are great. I will be sure to tune in!

I am with ya!,

RF Geek...your encouragement along with the others is great. We appreciate that & this will be a fun project!!!

Just listen to our trailer...we've already been told it can't be done. ;)

Yeah I agree it does sound like a fun project, I believe it will be a great alternative also. ... and having it on AM radio especially makes the nostalgia more alive and fun to listen to with that great AM sound ;) Not to cause any conflicts or anything, but the ones who doubt what you do, are the ones that probly don't believe in taking risks in radio. We need more of that nowadays, especially the passion that somtimes lacks behind the radio mic. My hats off to you! I'll be listening..

Since the stick was just sitting there collecting dust in the first place...then who can fault Jack for fllipping it to SOMETHING!!!!!

Sure, the station probably won't be a HUGE ratings giant. But It's better than a simulcast. And frankly, that music is GREAT.

I love that stuff. Even if you're not openly spiritual, if you had a churched upbringing...odds are you're familiar with some of this stuff. And who knows? maybe some will hear this old stuff, get a spark of nostalgia, and give the church a chance again.

And my guess is that the station isn't being put on to be a ratings giant in the first place. My feeling about this is that it's probably more of a ministry move than anything. And a good one. I hear Christians asking for this music all the time. Nobody's playing it.

jack-
since KWOF is turning 850 into a classics station, i got to ask... what about the spirit in waterloo? so i no longer get todays christian hits? please tell me there are imminent plans to bring 89.1 via translator to waterloo.
thanks

I think Stickman is correct on this subject. I doubt it will go dark in a year. (God won't let it! ;)) I just don't think there is a big audience for Christian Rock in the Cedar Valley. Especially Christian Rock in mono.
Good luck as well!

Explains the CD quality Internet stream! ;) The Prodigal has now heard from all 50 states via email. When the AM turns off at sunset, the stream keeps crankin'.

Hello Jack,

Just ignore the doomsdayers and anonymous slammers on this board. You have a great format here. I worked CHR during the 80s and loved Stryper, Petra, etc. We had Stryper's "Honestly" in hot rotation at KG95/Sioux City and "Always There for You" in medium. Got several requests for both.

Sure, it would be nice to have it on an FM signal, but you do what you can with what's available. A locally-produced music format on 850 is much better than either of the alternatives: simulcast of 89.1 or a satellite feed of religious/right-wing talk from several states away.

It kills me how radio folks continually complain about corporate radio, cookie-cutter formats, satellites, etc. Then, when someone does a creative, innovative local presentation, they have to immediately pick it apart. Give it a chance, will ya?

i'm not slamming or whatever. i think the whole classic christian rock thing is cool. but, not being as old as some ppl, i'm not into the 70s and 80s christian music. i didn't accept JC until 94, so i dig the new music. that's why i'm hoping for a translater in waterloo. i would rather hear CHR than classic. just my opinion. and having worked with high school youth, i would think they aren't much for classic either. thanks and i hope to hear 89.1 in waterloo soon.

I hear ya...I would love to get The Spirit in Waterloo & Iowa City. I don't think MN Maniac was actually referring to you. :)
