Radio Station Plans Vinyl Sale

Dayton's WSWO-LP "Ultimate Oldies Radio" is planning another vinyl sale! The all-volunteer operation survives on donations, and has built up over 10,000 LPs and 45s donated by listeners in the past year or so. Also some CDs. [EDIT*]All kinds of music - not just R&R. We've worked hard to get rid of the worn-out records; what's left over is in good shape.

Saturday, September 10 and Sunday September 11. Noon to 6pm each day. 6182 Chambersburg in Huber Heights - just west of Brandt Pike, across from St Peter Church, next to the BMV Free admission. NO EARLY SALES!

A recent article in the Dayton Daily News spurred many vinyl donations. In the past 2 weeks, we've received over 3,000 LPs and over 2,000 45s. That's in addition to a large storage locker full of records accumulated over the past year! This could well be the biggest sale we've had yet. Very important for an all-volunteer community non-com. More details can be found at www.daytonoldies.com

New donations are being dropped off everyday! This is a great chance to scoop up a piece of history and at the same time help Ultimate Oldies Radio keep operating in the Miami Valley. Let's see everyone this weekend at the WSWO studios in Huber Heights!!

Kahuna1: Actually the site of the sale, 6182 Chambersburg, is an otherwise empty storefront near the WSWO studios in Huber Heights.

It is a financial challenge for our Board of Directors to run an LPFM; and this is a major fundraising effort. Our listeners have been fantastic in digging up old vinyl to give to WSWO for the sale. While many people have moved on to CDs and iPods, there are many vinyl affectionados still out there. With a lot of digging just about everyone finds some "treasures"!

A good discussion topic for this forum would be for non-coms to share successful fund-raising ideas.

More details on the Record Sale are at www.daytonoldies.com

Has this record sale been successful in the past? That should be the obvious answer if it has. Your kindred spirit WRPO-LP up at Indian Lake may want to consider trying this as well.

It would certainly be interesting to see how active such a sale might be up there.

But the big difference to remember is Ultimate Oldies/Dayton has a much larger potential customer base (Huber Heights alone has about 40-thousand people by and of itself). Russell's Point/Lakeview together has a population of around 2700...maybe 7,000 or so total in the listening area outside of summertime.

Maybe something to ponder might be to try and collect some 45's and albums then tie in with maybe, say, the Party At The Point next year and put up a booth and see what happens...(That's at the height of summer and maybe the combination of the locals, and the visitors might make it work.)

By the way, I know this is a major fundraiser for the station here, and I hope it's, again, very successful for them.

Hope it is for them as well.

Summer would be the best time for a WRPO fundraiser....that's a no-brainer.
When The Cowsills performed at Oldfield Beach in Lakeview back in July it would have (I think) been a perfect opporitunity for WRPO to do so.

Can it be done again if an oldies act was lured to the lake next summer?
Then a fundraiser such as this may work in conjunction with another Party At The Beach concert. The Fisher Flea Market is right across the highway from there...a perfect place to have one if the owners agree to donate some space for it.

I'm thinking maybe:
Chubby Checker
Three Dog Night(which I understand is perfoming with the Dayton Philharmonic sometime soon)
Paul Revere and The Raiders
The Van Dells
or other 60s or 70s artists who still tour.

You and I know that WRPO can use the extra dollars to help pay the bills and hopefully upgrade...after some "detailing work" is done by the station owners beforehand if you catch my drift.

BTW:
Station manager Gene Kirby is turning 80. Happy Birthday Gene!
