Radio Station Websites

Is it one of the fairly new staff members? The WMBR management (actually, the alumnus who is the President of the Board of Trustees) lectured the staff about complying with the DMCA a few years ago, but they haven't kept it up. I wouldn't be surprised if newer staff (especially newer students) haven't heard about it.

I have heard some of the newer shows, especially ones that are on late at night, violate the DMCA. There was a late night show just last year that was playing whole CD's all the way through.

I'm still complying on my show, as are just about all the other longtime community members. I don't want any chance for the station to be fined on my watch, and you know that these regulations are all about greed and collecting fines from violators... because they can.

I'm not going to comment on which show or member, in fact there is more than one person at WMBR who has expressed the same ignorance of the rules, that's not my point. I know and like these people and I believe them when they state they have not been informed by the powers that be about the DMCA rules.

I have spoken to several people at local stations and the amount of misinformation out there is amazing. Granted the whole DMCA is a goverment implemented piece of crap in support of an industry that has fallen so far behind the times that they can't find any other way to realize a profit. It is also very restrictive and seems to be put together with very little intelligent thought.
BUT it is the law and like it or not we have to comply. There is no other choice.

If one station has to comply they all should. Until someone smartens up and puts this legislation into the same garbage can that the proposed additional tax on
blank cassette tapes from years ago and a whole lot of other foolish proposals eventually ended up. Remember when the whole purpose of broadcasting music was to encourage people to buy radios so they could hear it ? I believe that Soundexchange spends most of the money they collect on lawyers and advertising anyway. The artists don't get what they should.

has anyone ever been fined?

Is anyone aware of any station getting a fine for violating the 3 song rule of the DMCA?

I did read on David Byrne's blog a few years ago that he got a warning for his webcast.
