Radio Stations are Laying off and restructuring themselves to save money

So many already laid off for companies like Town Square & Clear Channel including myself I also hear cuts at Cumulus.

It's a big radio recession long time on-air people are being laid off including people from the bottom as well Production, Remote Coordinators, Live on Location Crews.

No Cuts at Albany Broadcasting so far.... which really has me wondering

If you think your ready for radio now this is not the time to enter this market you might want to wait this out a few years.

albany has such a small market and with the economy the way it is stations will find ways to save money any way and any where they can.

everyone in radio is in the RED

So here's my little burst of reality.

I got out (not by choice) in 1993.

I've fantasized many times of getting back in. But even back in `93, I saw the writing on the wall. The business was changing. Playing music on AM was great... and when I got promoted to playing music on FM  -- that was even greater! The problem was, satellite programming seemed to be making more of a dent those days, and IIRC that was the reason I lost my last 2 gigs. (There probably was a point though, when I even thought MusicRadio 77 would never change!) I loved being on-air, and loved the production end of it just as much. I couldn't sell mud to a pig! --- so being a salesperson wasn't an option. I also don't fancy picking up stakes and relocating every year... so I'm not very flexible. But I still live and breathe radio. I'm never without it, asleep or awake. I never dreamed back then that I'd be able to listen to it (like I can today) on a hand-held telephone :D Or imagine that the guy/girl on the air "recorded" their show hours ago and are probably at home doing laundry while it's airing! Things sure have changed.

I'm sure glad I got out when I did ;)

Albany Broadcasting doesn't fire...they treat people like crap, in the worst ways, and try to force them out.

I don't see radio...as I knew it (live, local etc) lasting too much longer...the people in charge don't have a reason to keep it going....the $$ is what it's all about

Bottom line, what works is great radio produced and created by people with vision run by money bags willing to take a chance... We've proven it over and over again through out the history of commercial radio! With our sights set on alternate sources of media (which is smart to a degree) cutting back on radio entertainment is the beginning of the end, great people who know from where we've come and know what works, that's what is in short supply...

more cuts I am sure until there only down to like 2 or 3 jocks everything run by computers now in this industry , if you thought it was hard to get in a few years ago its nearly impossible today to even get an intern in the door like myself or to hire them afterwards.

Radio is getting worse the industry not the music the people who manage these stations need to get off there high horse and stop using radio jocks as pawns

I Don't know who you are really?? but I am not in the mood to start a war on this forum the bottom line is I never did anything stupid I followed every policy at TSM, somebody in there didn't like me from what I am thinking although I could be wrong , what was really arrogant of them to do was to CRITICIZE the way i was dressing and saying that I had Bad Body odor which in fact I did not.

Things have really gone down hill since TSM Started laying off people I wish them the best of luck , some of these radio stations are playing with fire all they want is your talent for money nothing more nothing less

these days if you don't give them what they want in radio they will toss you or if someone in there knows you and hates you they will also toss you depending on if that person is connected to the hire up management staff. totally wrong there should be no biases

Radio is changing for the worst around the capital region , I wish all in the radio business the best of luck because the laying off like reporter said is far from over .....

myself I am not going into radio for the money or the ego , I am going in because I love the field it's interesting to me, alot of people in today's radio market start this big ego thing of how great they are I am a star sorry your nothing but a market managers pawn.

again no recovery of the economy more downsizing in radio stations in this market.

I know alot of people who have ego's won't name names it makes you look terrible, I give all respect though to john gabriels his listeners loved him he had no ego and he was well liked. I true mistake on CC part to toss him

Not to try to start a flame-fest or whatever you want to call it, but here is something I've observed over the years of doing business:

The business world (radio and anything else for that matter) has changed very much. Employees are rarely let go, simply because the company makes an arbitrary decision. There are a number of factors at play.

The first is, simply put, money. Without a doubt, if an employee costs you more than they return in revenue, then they are no longer an asset. They cost the company money and what is the point in that? Why keep someone around just for fun, or because they are a nice person? Economics are what they are.

Second, is job performance. The employee is the last to notice just how poorly they are doing, and often times, poor management is just as to blame in that they don't point these things out, nor do they deal with them until the issues have gotten too far out of hand to be fixed.

Third, the idea that someone hates you is an age-old one. It does happen to be sure, but generally, there has to be more than a schoolyard rivalry to fire someone. The risk today of litigation, etc makes it a tough decision ofr anyone to let an employee go without good reason.

Last, employees seem to always pull out the "greedy corporation" card after any situation like this. Face it, these companies are in business for one thing: That is to make a profit. Businesses of any sort can't function without it. You cannot be paid without it.

Lawrence .. brace yourself for plain english.

You kept posting on here. Companies frown upon that. Plain and simple.

You weren't laid off. Layoffs are cutting back to save money. Townsquare Media isn't showing people the door to save money.

Assuming things like that and posting internal things online is a great way to be shown the door. Case Closed.

i see you work for TSM Radio102 , I posted on here to chat about radio not to put down radio companies. If they really frowned on it they should explained this in full details to me, poor management there I felt abandoned the rules were never fully explained to me being new to radio.

well they told me I was let go so that tells me its a layoff

I truly felt uncomfortable when I was told I had BO and stuff no company should tell someone this its totally unrespectful, I have no remorse for TSM.

Radio is not a secret anymore stuff gets out big deal

Whatever the circumstances were "radio 101", it is unfortunate that you are now with out a job. At some point hopefully in the not to distant future you will find something gainful and it probably will not be in radio. At some point you will look back and say that you were glad to be doing something else. I liked "RBW's" post about getting out in 1993, don't know what kind of work he is doing now, but I get the idea he is satisfied with it. While I have friends that work or have worked in radio, I only worked in it for 4 months. It was planned on my part to be temporary. In fact, when I took the job, I was not even trying to get into broadcasting. I am glad for the experience and it makes me appreciate the people who put up with less than fair management to work these jobs.

I am glad to see the local radio stations are spying on us on the forum very typical of them just like they do in the studio's at the station, So many rules and regulations in Fact I was kinda mad they let go of mike morgan he was a good friend of mine and he was under a contract they still laid him off and now he is taking them to court.

I thought radio was gonna be a good career for me I am now rethinking the whole idea I wasted my time and money going to the new school of radio the market in albany in radio is pathetic, I am not gonna pursue radio I totally changed my mind the knickman. radio is too unstable and the management is just out for money they could give a rats ass who you are and what your goals are in the business.

Radio will never be like it was 10 yrs or so ago things are changing too much corporate GREED and your always being watched like a your there puppet on a string.

no worry knickman i have another job that was just extra money it was only minimum wage anyhow.

too much stress in radio from management and there always changing rules and it's not stable at all.

radio102 hmmm brian I assuming the only digital capable guy of spying for TSM funny how you changed your name on facebook if that's who I assuming you are, this is a radio chat forum were allowed to assume things.

again people in radio companies hold grudges and like to spy and tell white lies this is the reason you can't trust anyone in radio not even the friends you were trying to make.

I actually had the task of explaining to two co-workers at one time that they were coming in to work in a rather odiferous manner. One was pretty cool about it an went with it. When we are trying to make what few pennies we make count, sometimes we skip on washing clothes. The other never recovered or changed. She didn't make it to the next Christmas party. You try to make it as conversational as possible and not be degrading about it. But at the same time, you can't be subtle. The message is lost if you beat around the bush. If your perfume or what your perfume is covering up remains in the studio long after your shift, you might get the talk. Its not fun. :p
