After going on a tirade about Hazleton's immigration law ;D I thought I should bring up a radio topic again. There are a few stations that have surprisingly survived despite early criticism and doom and gloom predictions.
One impressive survivor is the Mountain. It seems to have a loyal following and appears to have staying power (at least as much as possible in the radio world). I think one of the things that has helped is that they have kept to their early promise to stick to the music. Very little talk, no news, traffic, and only brief weather forecasts in the morning (I admit I would not mind traffic reports, even if they are usually a waste of time). And they have a large playlist and make adjustments to it over time (usually to add more songs). Jim Rising has done a great job with the Mountain and Entercom deserves some small praise for not giving up on a nonmainstream station. They even manage to stay in the top 10 in the arbitron ratings.
Another is EZ 103. Even I expected this station to not last longer than a year but now we are post 2 years. Probably because they offer a true alternative to Magic 93. I always like lots of choices and listen to EZ from time to time when I need to relax at work.
JR is still hanging on. I don't know if Citadel doesn't know what to do with it or if they really believe in it and hope to turn things around. I don't like country, but they seemed to have started off strong. Perhaps they should look at some of that to improve their outlook.
The River also seems to be making inroads, improving their ratings. I only wish I could get them in downtown Wilkes-Barre. I love the 70's and 80's and loved listening to them when I was by the Arena. Vanderheyden, if you're out their, help us out in downtown W-B so I can listen too.
Any other radio survivors who everyone thought would die horrible deaths and didn't?
