Radio Towers in Emerryville-Oakland

I have flown over them many times recently and today while coming back from Emerryville I decided to take the West Grand Avenue way to Southbound 880 and I found them on the ground. Except they are on the top of an industrial building, 4-towers and the first thing I woundered is how they have a working ground system.

I then tuned in 1510 Khz and they were strong. Are they still using this tower system?

Since they are protecting 1500 Khz. at San Jose they must have a tight pattern.

Can someone shed light on this tower system, how much power and is it both their day and night site?

I appreciate your replies.

Thanks for the link joewo. The maps shows the exact spot where I was today. KPIG 1510 does sound good in the East Bay and SF. However the station just does not have any pressence here.

Another low rated station, KYCY 1550 does get some listeners with its I-Pod shows, the Oakland A's and now a morning simulcast of Channel 5 news.

It also sounds like the owners of KPIG 1510 have not really benefited from the simulcast of their South Bay station up here.

My question is if someone bought that facility what could they do with it? Who would be a good propesctive buyer?

Your thoughts.

Well, they are selling ads, and covering their costs of purchase and operation. They only have to pay the staff in Watsonville for air work. So I'm not sure what you mean, unless you are talking about "ratings", which matter little to them. They are filling a niche, and that has been "good enough" for the owners. KPIG is the most successful station among the Mapleton holdings in the Monterey Bay area, and AM1510 is just gravy for them.

Re: Radio Towers in Emeryville-Oakland

Don,

My thoughts were that is does not benefit KPIG that much by being in San Francisco. Similar to KBAY when they moved into San Francisco and simulcasted on 94.5 and 93.3. It never really happened here and they moved back to San Jose.

Santa Cruz/Monterey and San Jose are great markets within themselves and adding San Francisco is great but as you said they are very sucessful without it.

Now are there any stations in San Francisco that have added a simulcast in San Jose or Monterey and were they sucessful?

Yes,

KSOL/KSQL

KSOL out of SF on KSQL out of Santa Cruz doing extremely well.
