Radio-TV Coverage of Cheshire Murders

New Haven Register TV-Radio Editor Joe Amarante did an analysis in Friday's newspaper on media coverage of the tragic murders in Cheshire.

He posted his story on his blog on 7/24 at...

I read that WELI did a good job of coverage lol. For being a local radio station they didn't do a great job at all. It wasn't even the major top story. In New Haven that preset must have gotten replaced with WTIC if it wasn't already a preset or maybe WCBS or WINS.

MarcB - I understand your concern about the coverage. A letter writer to the Courant the other had the same concern. But the crime is sickening and the story has a lot of elements to it. A lot of us are trying to make sense of this crime and are looking for coverage. You bring up a good question - what is in good taste, and how much news coverage is enough?

Ken - The story said WQUN did a good job of coverage, not WELI. But I agree with your assessment about the legendary station that brands itself as "news-talk". The word news is misleading

I know, you saw I put "lol" after I said that right? :)

Does WTIC 1080 come in good down in New Haven at all? Just wondering.

WELI is no longer a local news-talk station anyway thanks to CC's cost-cutting. The news department is gone, and the info comes in from upstate NY.

BTW, this event got a lot of national coverage too. It was very tragic, and tragedy makes news these days. Just wait until the trials start, national outlets will be all over the place.

Yes. But it depends on the quality of the AM radio and building interference. I have no problems when I have my radio next to the office window, and no problem in the car.

For years the Weather Channel Promoted they "never tell you more than they know." The same should be true for the coverage of events like the Cheshire murders. I watched LOTS of videotape of coverage and more often than not reporters did a good if not gret job for the first few days....but then it came to interviewing distant relatives, neighbors who had been away on vacation and HEARD about the murders...you get the idea.

tell me what you know and tell me what you don't know (sometimes equally illuminating) then move on.
