Radio U of Columbus, OH--Free Syndication

From their website:

------------------
This is RadioU. We call this format for radio stations "where music is going" because that's what it really is. You surely know there's a gigantic, underserved audience that's looking for a little more than just "My Humps" from their radios every ninety minutes. Perhaps easily distracted by shiny objects, the 12-24s have begun to seek solace among their iPods, MySpace pages, and even satellite radio.

You can do something about it. Your radio station or even your HD Radio™ multicast channel can become one of the early adopters of RadioU. And for a limited time, we're prepared to give RadioU to your station for free. No cash, no barter. 100% free. We're ready for some stations pick up this music and do something with it.

My question is, could something like this fly in Indianapolis? Even as an HD2 station, I think there is a market for it.

Yes. Isn't Song doing Christian rock on their HD2?

I live in Columbus but I never listen to that station. BTW, I was in Indy last week and I enjoyed some of your stations. I don't know why but I really liked 107.9 The Track. I didn't care too much for your Jack. Hot 96.3 sounds Identical to Power 107.5 here and although RadioNow played a much better mix of music vs WNCI here in C-bus, I didn't care for the imaging or their DJ's.

Anyhow, Back to the original point, I personally don't care for Christian rock and Rap and I have no idea how well that station does here in Columbus since they do not subscribe to Arbitron. I imagine they must be making some money though since they have been on the air here for about 10 years if I remember correctly.
______________

I am not sure if they are commercial free, but I do remember hearing fund drives. And they have been on for forever, I remember hearing them in 2001.

RadioU is a great listen in my opinion. They might also be a good pickup for some of the Indianapolis high school stations (that is, if it doesn't take away from student broadcasting). It targets young adult males and is a good alternative for those who don't want to listen to mainstream rock.

Oh yes... good point... didn't think about that part.

> Might be good for U of I's FM at times, since they are Methodist affiliated... By the way, We got "Radio-U" on inn 1996 (March)... I was the GM that built them out, staffed them and then walked them through an ownwership change as Spirit first had to LMA them from a California group that had agreed to sell them prior to the build out... They don't show in the standard Arbitron as they are non-com.. They do bi-annual fund drives and have a satellite TV network that is the Christian CHR and Rock versions of MTV/VH-1....TVU is pretty sharp on production and quality value... I was not there when TVU came to be.... They have a top notch studio(s) and broadcast off a high point on the Channel Six tower near Grove City and studios are in Westerville off the loop...

I was unaware of this aspect of RadioU's history. Would this unnamed California group still exist? Or even be a group that anyone's heard of?

FWIW, they have also now started "Spirit", a Christian AC/Variety music video channel, to serve families and adults that find TVU too edgy. http://www.spirit-television.com/

Also, they do have an LPFM affiliate in Marion - the College Wesleyan Church's WCWC-LP "Truth 94.3". http://marion.radiou.com/

They are also edging closer to signing on a handful of translators throughout Ohio that they were able to acquire as part of the "Great Translator Invasion."

Yeah.. Harold Camping's Family Radio Group out of Sacramento.. Very strange, but with the help of a Way-FM board member, the Shumates and I were able to get this group to hand over the "CP" and we built it out and at the same time filed for transfer of assignment.. Their corporate engineer was a great elderly guy named Wes Becker and he kept quiet to the home office in Sacramento what our format was to be (Mr. Camping would have tried to break the deal)...Mr. Becker was in his late 70's, but had grandkids that liked our type of music and he wanted to see it get on-the-air...

Great to hear of the new translator network, forthcoming.... And I have been aware of IWU's LPFM that carries the "U"....And the AC/CHR based "Spirit" Video Channel...

Thanks for that interesting explanation. I'm not one to believe in miracles, but that sure sounds like one to me, knowing the historic stance of Family Radio.

Family will sell when it needs cash, and as long as the cash is green, they don't seem to care who the buyer is. They had an AM CP in Boston they couldn't afford to build, which eventually ended up as a sports station. An unbuilt FM CP in Syracuse, N.Y. ended up as a public radio relay. And of course they've sold powerful FM signals in Sacramento and San Francisco. Actually, they've sold two FMs in Sacramento - one (KEBR-FM 100.5) to what's now CBS Radio, and the other (the successor KEBR-FM at 89.3) to KQED public radio.
______________

The only Family Radio people that knew were the Office Manager in Sacramento and Wes Becker, the semi-retired engineer.. The lady at Family used to say I was the best 'manager' in the chain...I guess I always communicated and kept things up to snuff..Ha....Ha..... "Skip"
