Radio Versions That Annoy

In listening to 60s/70s stations I notice many stray clear of playing original edits versus shortened radio edits. Two obvious ones that come to mind are "American Pie" and "Piano Man."

What 60s and 70s songs do you often hear on the radio as the short versions instead of the original longer versions?

Roll Over Beethoven ELO
Dialogue by Chicago & Lyin' Eyes by the Eagles,

In-Gadda-da-Vida & Light My Fire

The ones I really hate aren't the shortened ones, it's the ones with different lyrics for AM & FM, like "Good Girls Don't".

"Beginnings" by Chicago. The 3 minute version is garbage...only the album version should ever be played. How can all those incredibly sounding horns in the 3-6 minute portion be ignored?? It's an incredible song, when played at full length.

Also early fade outs of "Hey Jude" are annoying! The song is 7 minutes long, not five.

1968's "Magic Carpet Ride" is so much better at full-length.

Heard a sliced up version of Tiny Dancer the other day...almost seems criminal to do that to a masterpiece..

Steve Winwood's "While You see a Chance" has the WORST edit in the middle (removing the second verse). He's singing "can't you see?" and in the middle of "see" the pitch changes noticeably and it goes into a synth progression. You'd think the record company could have at least cross-faded to make it more seemless, but they just chopped it.

"For What It's Worth" (not the song) , but my take..no edits on my toy station..you want Light My Fire..you get it all..same with Beginnings, and Make Me Smile which actually has Color my world in the middle..i always play the long version if i have it..i do acknowledge in the past I have faded Hey Jude toward the end..Not really one of my fav fab four tunes..and just how many na na na na's...do you really need to hear ??? :)

Just thought of another one. Billy Joel's "Piano Man" -- I usually hear a 3-3.5 minute version on the radio. It skips two half-verses and the chorus once.

"Play That Funky Music" Wild Cherry. The second verse is always eliminated, and they go straight from the first verse to the solo!

"That's The Way I Like It" KC & the Sunshine Band. Always the early fade? Why? You play the long fade of "Stayin' Alive" by the BeeGees. Why not this one as well?

"Get Down Tonight" also by KC & the Sunshine Band. Much of the solo near the end is cut out.

Richard Marx, "Endless Summer Nights" Don't even get me started on that butcher job! ACs always like to chop it to bits!

Billy Joel, "My Life." Even his greatest hits album contains the edit!

Bob Seger, "Against the Wind." The solo is cut out of this one as well!

Marshall Tucker Band, "Can't You See." Heard a radio station cut this one off, and then later learned that they were playing a version with an early fade! ::)

"Hey Jude" IS one of my top three Beatles faves (along with "Let It Be" and "Yesterday"), but I agree that the "na na na" chorus is an easy one for backtiming into network news at the top of the hour. And we've always referred to it as a seven-minute song, but after about six minutes, it fades to the point that it must be cut, anyway. And if any of you have that Beatles number ones album (20 songs on one LP), you know that they had to fade "Hey Jude" early to make it fit onto the record. (Not to be confused with the 1 CD, in which it appears unedited.)

I loved the long musical intro to "White Rabbit".

Santana's "Black Magic Woman" without "Gypsy Queen" always annoys.

Layla - Derek & The Dominoes

Heard It In A Love Song - The Marshall Tucker Band

The GoldDisc version of "Devil With the Blue Dress On" by Mitch Ryder.

Paul McCartney's "With a Little Luck" should not have been cut. He even released it that way on "Wingspan." The full version is on "London Town."

I like the radio edit of the Who's "Who Are You" in which the F word is edited out but the song is otherwise unmolested. But the radio version that removes a verse is awful. Then there's another version not originally on the album that ADDS a fourth verse. That's kinda cool.

"Papa Was a Rolling Stone" - The Temptations

-On radio, I've heard the shortened version many times. However the original version is played as well, although not as frequently.

"Always and Forever" - Heatwave

-Same as above, except there is a 50/50 chance of a particular radio station playing the shortened radio version compared to the original version.
