Radio Wars

I heard today that KQMV flew a banner with their logo over KUBE's Summer Jam. are radio wars making their way back into Seattle. Here's another question. Who cares? Listeners? nah...Competing stations..maybe..what do you all think?

Oh NO! Not a BANNER! Did 92.5 suddenly steal all of KUBE's listeners according to Arbitron minute measurements?

wow menace! you being a board op, I'm surprised you even know what Arbitron is! my post was meant more as a reference to spark a discussion about radio wars between stations. it wasn't meant to say that KQMV would be stealing KUBE listeners by displaying one banner. thought that was pretty clear, but if I need to dumb it down for you in the future please let me know.

Seems just like a waste of money on Movin's part. Marc Kaye needs to rally the troops and create a target to go after, but KUBE is not it.

It's hard to get excited about someone raiding someone's territory at a promotion. The best battles are laid out on the airwaves.

I'm a fan of good, creative radio. Having some canned voice with the name Brad is not good, creative radio.

But "Brad" is a major star and a compelling personality!
You can hear him on NAPA Autoparts radio spots.
When I'm in buying an oil filter, I sure feel good.
And I believe his is the automated voice on the phone prompts for United Air Lines.
After I toss my cookies in the airsick bag on a United flight, I feel good, too.
LOL.

The truth is that Radio Wars is a reasonable question, other remarks aside. As we're seeing in the Middle East (again) - for there to be a war, there has to be passion. The question I'd raise with either station's audience is how passionate are their listeners? I'm not presuming an answer - I'd like to hear your thoughts. In this day of new media, does the core P1 audience really care much?

You'll show up again in the next 20 years, too, Andy. One thing you missed---Circa not '72-'77, but circa '62-'77! Everything else you wrote is RIGHT ON! Burl is writing mystery books and Charlie is selling digital radio stuff outta Bainbridge Island. Seattle misses you, KING, KJR, KOL, KTW, KTAC, KUUU and on and on. Say hi to Steve Largent!

I missed the 60's-70's era. There was a hell of a radio war in the 80's between Z-101.5 and KUBE. Charlie and Ty against Kent and Alan. I remember listening back and forth through the 80's and to a station in Tacoma that had Gary Brian. By the time I got back from college KUBE had gone rythmic, the END was big, the Tacoma station was gone and KPLZ was the last CHR, soon they went HOT/AC. Maybe we just remember the battle's better as teenagers. The other battle I remember was KISW vs KXRX. 80's radio rocked. Deregulation killed competition in the 90's. I would say that there have been a couple of radio wars since that time: Young Country and KMPS (till dereg and KMPS bought them) Wolf and KMPS is shaping up to be pretty good right now. K-ROCK and KNDD was a short but bitter battle much like the KISW/KXRX battle. KOMO and KIRO have battled for years, but that is more like two old men in wheelchairs banging into each other. I would agree that in top-40 radio there has not been a good fight in this market since KUBE/KPLZ in the 80's. Don't even remember who won that fight.

Or circa '84-'85, with K-Plus FM, KUBE, KNBQ, and K-Hit 107! (Though I was crushed when KYYX flipped...)

88 or 89, I forget which year, KPLZ beat KUBE for good in straight-ahead Top 40. Until KUBE came back in 1991/1992 with the thump.

KPLZ won that fight in 1990, but it was a good one. I think there are some great battles going on today. MOVIN is certainly taking it to KBKS, knocking them out in June. I am sure KBKS will respond, but the battle is waged. I bet
MOVIN gets a night jock and maybe mornings but keeps rollin music during the day. I think the KMPS/WOLF battle is a good with lots of personality on both stations. The KBSG/KJR battle is pretty good too. I am way to young to remember the 60's and 70's radio wars, but the 80's battles were good and it is really heating up now.

I think the definition of "battle" is being re-defined here. KPLZ and KUBE was the last on-air battle Seattle experienced. KLSY tried, but KPLZ just laughed, brushed them off their shoulder and did their own business.

It takes two to tango, and while The Wolf wants to play "bad boy," but KMPS does their thing behind the scenes.

KBSG and KJR-FM isn't a "battle" either, as originally defined. Yeah, they (and the country folks) battle it out in the sales field, but I don't hear any shots fired across the bow over the air.
