Radio Waves: Dec. 13 Edition

Sunday's edition of Ben Fong-Torres' Radio Waves is available in preview mode on the Chronicle's website:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/12/11/PkI31ATKN6.DTL

Included: ex-KGO newsman Greg Jarrett comments on his experience so far as morning man at Chicago's WGN; the 30th anniversary of Elmo & Patsy's "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer," which prompted an appearance by the reclusive Gene Nelson on "Good Morning America"; and a few radio-related Christmas stocking stuffers.

Dr Elmo's a hoot! His voice and guitar work are excellent, the singer/dancers added a lot to the video. It's too bad I can't seem to download the video. It's a keeper.

It's strange that Gene Nelson doesn't look at all like he used to. I wouldn't recognize him if I saw him in person, and yet he was my announcing teacher at CSM, so I once saw him quite a bit.

I thought KOIT was 96.5 FM and not 95.7 FM.
Where are Ben Fong-Torres' fact checkers?

The Comical laid them all off.

B F-T is more or less a freelancer, and his column appears every other weekend. I suspect that fact-checking has always been his responsibility.

I've noticed frequent mistakes with details like call letters and frequencies in his column, also. I suspect that he probably loves individual radio shows and hosts, and the occasional station, but otherwise doesn't pay a lot of attention.

Having been the subject of a Radio Waves column or two, I can assure you that facts are checked relentlessly. Sometimes, though, as in the case of 95.7 instead of 96.5, you read over it a dozen times and you still miss it. Chalk it up to a brain fart.

In a bygone era all articles published in the Chronicle were fact-checked and also checked for grammar and spelling. While never the NY Times of the West, the Chronicle did used to have some standards. I realize they've been losing $1 million a week, but instead of giving us a quality product, they've laid off editorial staff. It's no wonder the NY Times now tailors its local edition to the Bay Area twice a week. Before long we'll probably see Radio Waves in the Times.

The lack of editing extends far beyond newspapers awash in red ink...there aren't any at the wire services, tv stations, or radio stations any more either. Unfortunately, some people even neglect to use the built-in spell check in their word processor before dashing words off into the ether.
