Radio Waves: Farid Fires Back...

Ooh, snap! Broadcasting genius Farid Suleman seems to think that KGO (810 AM) was successful in spite of Mickey Luckoff, according to Ben Fong-Torres in this Sunday's Radio Waves:

Suleman was dismissive of Luckoff's long list of achievements, including being inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame. "A station like KGO has been successful," he said, "because of a lot of dedicated people. It's just that the person at the lead gets the credit."

The whole thing is at http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/11/12/PKAH1G78RS.DTL

I think if we eliminate the names, we'd all agree with the statement that the success of any organization is the result of a team effort, not just the person at the top. If he's any kind of leader, I'm sure Luckoff said the exact same thing in his acceptance speach. Nothing controversial there.

I also agree with the point that Luckoff had three years to realize that the company he worked for had changed. Hundreds of other former Disney people made that realization and left, both at local stations and at the radio network. Then in November of last year, the company fired a pile of people at their Dallas programming hub. The writing was on the wall. But had he left then, he would not have been seen as a martyr. We now live in an at-will world. You don't like who you work for, the solution is simple: quit.

Not Quite Quit! Find something better and move on! Everyone runs their business differently than we would and Farid has and did use his power as CEO. Nobody will ever exceed the success that Mickey did! Not with this station anyway!

Yet another statement that displays a classless Farid. And it is yet another example of him never respecting the fact that these ABC stations he was drooling to get hold of, were built on the backs of guys like Mickey and other ABC veterans. So who would you trust to fix problems as they cyclically erupt, the guy intimately aware of the market, format and station, or the genius of Farid who has NEVER ran a radio station.

Just because he was an accountant for Mel, didn't make him as smart as Mel or a broadcaster. That's like being an accountant in a hospital and think you can do brain surgery. Farid doesn't want experience, he wants people he can dictate what little he knows about radio to. He resented paying any of the ABC guys what they earned in an entrepreneurial envireonment. While he raked in millions and wrecked a company that he stripped down so bad they couldn't operate because he overbought. He worked against these guys from the moment he took over, made crap deals behind their backs and NOW he wants to fire back on Mickey as the problem for KGO.

Mickey Luckoffs accomplishments can never be degraded by Citadel. All staions and formats get sick, give Mickey the resources and time and space, he would fix it. Citadel is now an empty company that changes for change sake to make the mindless board think that he knows what he is doing.auggggghh!!!

There was once a mighty signal,
With ratings as high as could be;
But its parents stopped feeding it.
Now, no one hears KFRC.

Once a most popular station,
All looked up to KGO
Til weakened leaders lost their grip
and lost the prize we used to know.

Listeners in San Francisco
Still know where their frequencies lurk;
AND Know they've lost the talented souls
That made their stations work.

Great big corporations
Chuck it all to save of a buck,
While folks who used to listen, say,
"So long, Mickey, best of luck."

We need another verse in the poem, this one about Fagreed.
But to finish it, here's my great need.
I'm stuck...unless I find a word that rhymes with "luck." ;D

Taylor On Radio said:
Those Citadel stock grants to the execs magically turned back into stock options. Texas-based Citadel investor R2 (R squared) blew the whistle on what it said were tens of millions of dollars worth of improper outright grants of stock – mostly to CEO Farid Suleman. He could’ve made $40-50 million or more. And the board members who went along were in for paydays of $1.3 million each.

To squelch the static in bankruptcy court and in the court of public opinion, Citadel agreed to rescind the grants and return to the original plan of issuing incentive-building stock options.

Now we get the SEC filings for five top Citadel executives, and Farid still gets far more than the other four. But both sets of options being offered (priced at $28 and $32) are underwater. Citadel’s post-bankruptcy stock closed yesterday at $24.50 on the over-the-counter pink sheets.

So as Citadel continues its recovery, here’s what Farid has tacked on his wall. He has 1,897,193 options at $28 ($53,121,404) and 632,398 at $32 ($20,236,736).

COO Judy Ellis has nearly 100,000 options at $28 (@$2,200,000) and 33,265 at $28 ($931,420).

General Counsel Judith Orr and CFO Randy Taylor both have about 80,000 options at $28 and 26,613 at $32. And Senior VP of Finance & Administration Patricia Stratford has 56,137 at $28 and 18,711 at $32. The options begin vesting next June 3 and vest over the next three years. They expire in 2020.

Oh, the directors are also incentivized. They get 47,434 options at $28 ($1,328,152) and 15,811 at $32 ($505,952).

Being the fair and trusted CEO that he is, Suleman will no doubt offer Citadel employees options on restoring vacation time, salaries and re-hiring once the "strike price" is reached.
