Radio Waves (Nov. 16 Edition) -- Must Read!

DK, you really don't need to testify on your own behalf. There are plenty of us here who know you and your work.

My training was at CSM/KCSM in the same classes as Mike Amatori (KGO/KSFO) and Jon Miller (SF Giants).

...But that I didn't know. Are you yet another proud product of the Dan Odum School of Modern Radio Technique at CSM? Were Gary Mora and Dean Goss also part of your CSM class?

Mr Boss radio DJ.... Yes I made those posts but don't know a Verne White is it this one?

I live in Los Angeles but I guess Mike Case is a common name

Sure it is. And, since you're obviously an avid reader of Ben's "Radio Waves," you're undoubtedly very familiar with his article in the San Francisco Chronicle about Verne White, right?

Enjoy!

Gary Mora I'd heard of but didn't know. Dean Goss I wasn't familiar with at the time. Yes, Dan Odum was running radio when I was there. He once chastized me for saying "Errol Gardner" rather than "Errol Garner". I'm not sure how he did it, but he listened to every syllable and breath on KCSM-FM's entire broadcast day.

At the time I was there TV was run by Doug Montgomery. Rick Zanardi was I think second in command on TV (always dressed in some knockout suits). He was a great director to learn from. Jim Threlkeld was TD supervisor at TV. Joe Morgan was CE for both stations -- I learned a lot from him about engineering, especially those little DUH details such as putting a thermometer in the exhaust air stream to be able to tell when your final output tubes are starting to go bad (when an output tube becomes inefficient it puts out more heat). I love those DUH engineering tricks!

Let's see...also in our classes on the radio side was Jerry Yarberry, who went on to station management and ownership in the Northwest. (I ran into him some years later when he came into the restaurant I once owned, and we chatted about why he got out of broadcasting and into collecting cars instead....)

What a shame KFRC gone again to budget cuts at CBS .. Keep Ben Fong Torres OFF THE AIR and give more time to write his column. Even that is mostly fictional with very little reasearch!

Sheesh, again, right in front of us, David Kaye paints himself into a corner. With his "friendly" criticisms of professionals much more accomplished than himself and unmasked lust for Ben Fong-Torres' column it's difficult to take his judgments seriously.

Kinda feel badly for the folks he mentioned on his attempted resume:
... Tom Wilson ... Tom Benner... Jim Hall ... Clyde Calvo ... Jerry Harms ... Dave Evans ... Ken Hobbs ... Don DeFesi ... just random names... all quite visible...also in the Portland market...went to same classes as Mike Amatori...and Jon Miller.
...because he lowers them into his same gravesight while trying to validate himself.

...Most of the other people I worked with have gone on to obscurity just as I have....Gary Mora...didn't know. Dean Goss I wasn't familiar with...Dan Odum......Doug Montgomery. Rick Zanardi...Jim Threlkeld..Joe Morgan...
What a resume, DK. It could easily assigned your own constantly parroted expression: Very yesterday.

Wonder what prompted you to emerge from obscurity?

I agree with Skyrocker. What gets into DK on the subject of Ben Fong-Torres. BFT is a wonderful human being with a list of excellent professional credentials and he cares about radio on a much larger scale than most anyone in the Bay Area. He chooses to lend his talents to a regular column on radio. I think if anyone other than BFT was pitching a radio column to the Chron it would never see the light of day.

It is hard to take any DK criticism seriously after his rant against Ben has drivelled in this blog for the past year.

DK; Get over it, whatever "it" is, and rejoin civilization as we know it.

This Dave Evans mentioned in a post above wouldn't be the same Dave Evans that along with Dr. Smith that owned a part of KHTN 92.1 in Placerville back in the 1980's would he? If it is he had a great radio voice. Newsperson I bet you have the answer to this question.

Newsperson responds:

RadioStarOne;

I don't see where the name Dave Evans is mentioned anywhere in this thread.

Yes the Dave Evans we knew had worked for the old KGMS 1380 in Sacramento. I also remember he recorded a legal ID for KTHO back in the late 70s that ran into the 80s. It certainly had a big balls sound. We used to (1980) go into it at the top of hour when we would re-join the FM and broadcast AP news.

Last I saw Dave Evans he was really stressed over the radio station and his doctor told him he sould sell his interest.
The Dave Evans we are talking about last ran and owned Broadcast Audio consoles and he passed away a few years after selling his interest in KHTN at Placerville.

Look two posts above mine and you will see Dave Evans name mentioned with a list of other radio people. BTW I never had heard that Dave Evans passed away and I'm sorry to hear about his passing! He was a really nice person and his company made some really awsome boards. I have some of his work done for KHTN in my tape collection. What ever happened to Guy Weybright also of KHTN and the voice of the bike races at the placerville fairgrounds? Guy also had one of those booming voices. And Carol Dains?
