Radio Waves

Just read Radio Waves from the Chronicle. Ben Fong-Torres does not mention the new 106.9 KFRC.
(was it written before the flip from FREE FM?)

But he does mention KTRB and questions their 'sounds of the bay' that is supposed to be the weekend programming.

The reason Ben did not mention the KFRC sign on is that his deadline was probably Thursday BEFORE the news broke about 106.9.
I have no doubt he'll mention it in the next column.

BFT's deadline is actually Wednesday A FULL WEEK ahead of publication -- the Sunday Datebook is written, edited and published well in advance of the day it arrives on the newstand or your doorstep.

Ben had actually emailed me before noon on Thursday to let me know that the change at KFRC was in the works, and he was Leah Garchik's quoted source for her piece in Friday morning's Chronicle.

It would be great if Radio Waves appeared every week, but it's only bi-monthly. With the deadline being so far ahead of publication, the column rarely has breaking news - but it's meant as a feature column, and Ben does a great job within the limitations placed on him.

With the announced news cutbacks at the Chron, it's not likely that Ben will get to go weekly. Too bad, too, as it's one of the best things in the Pink, period, IMHO. He's a fine writer with his finger on the pulse of the industry.

Ben is actually a freelance writer, not an employee of the newspaper, so he's not *really* subject to the day-to-day terror that staff writers live under.

If you haven't read any of Ben's recent works, including his hagiography of The Doors or "Becoming Almost Famous," then get yourself over to Amazon.com and order them now. His book "The Hits Just Keep On Coming" is a classic.

I agree 100%!!!!! I think the RADIO WAVES column should appear in the Pink section weekly instead of only one every two weeks!!!!! BTW, I'm interested in writing about radio myself someday, if I don't get an on-air radio job SOON! Any ideas on where to look?
