Radio, you shouldn't have to pay for it.

Am I alone in finding these ads annoying and odd? Does the NAB really think these spots will have any effect on satradio? If anything it's just giving them more publicity. I don't remember when cable tv was new but did free tv put up this type of fight?

Re: Huh????

The NAB is running ads saying that why should you pay to listen to radio, which is a slam on XM and Sirius. They got music stars to record them, and NAB member stations are suppose to air them. They are airing mainly on FM stations because they haven't done any for the talk stations to air.

Maybe no talk hosts wanted to be involved since so many of the talk shows are also aired on XM and/or Sirius. :)

I heard several aimed at Talk (& even Sports)
on the Sirius "Howard 100" channel.
There they've had a lot of fun poking fun at them....enjoying how they make little sense & even a case FOR signing up to hear ALL the (uncensored) talk.
Seems NAB didn't think it through very well before they panicked and rushed these wierd things out the door.

There are also ones that I've heard in smaller markets that mention talk, information, and music in one spot, saying the focus of local radio is important... some guy calling the radio station asking why he hasn't gotten a bill. People actually buy this? Not since my sister was panicked one morning because she left her radio on overnight and was worried we'd get a bill have I heard anyone think that...

Re: Huh????

Most of the ones I've heard (including WLW)have what sounds like a weather warning or traffic bulletin being interrupted by the three-tone "number is disconnected" telephone sound followed by an "operator" voice demanding that you insert another 25 cents.. adn a voice saying "radio-some things are meant to be free".<P ID="signature">______________

The NAB Has Been Renamed

The NAB has been renamed to the "National ASSociation of Boneheads" because they have completely missed the point with their ads.

People aren't paying to "listen to the radio." They're paying to listen to the programming/content that's being offered.

Idiots.

Well radio is promoting their medium like they sell. Instead of talking about the value of the medium they focus on the fact that is free.

Think about the word free. FREE BREAD at the grocery store means old, stale, moldy, funky bread that you are going to feed the gulls with. FREE means cheap. Most people don't want cheap programming and entertainment, they want quality.

The NAB are a bunch of knuckleheads.

I thought it was the "National Association for the Prevention of Creativity and Freedom in Commercial Radio," or words to that effect.

And with commercial radio, you DO pay. You pay first for the radio at the electronics store, and on a constant basis for either AA/AAA batteries or electricity to power the radio. Plus, you get charged for it.

Don't forget about the 15 to 20 minutes of commericals each hour.

Thank God for Ipods and SatRadio

Re: Huh????

I haven't heard the spots but it seems obvious to me...Why wouldn't they focus on the BENEFITS of local radio????? Things like local news, sports, weather, traffic and community events. Very simple. When you want to know why all of Public Square in blocked off or why there's firetrucks surrounding the "Q", you turn to a local station. I know those are lame examples, but you get the point. It's so obvious what the focus of those spots should be...

Re: Huh????

I agree. These may be the dumbest ads I've ever heard. I guess we are to believe that no one working in radio subscribes to satellite or cable TV, or has phone service or any other kind of technology, because shouldn't that have to be free as well?

And what exactly is "free" about traditional radio? The 20+ minutes of commercials each hour? The commercials during the programs where updates are sponsored by so-and-so?

And it's kind of funny when they mention how, if you want Sirius or XM, you have to buy a receiver, as if I listen to traditional radio the local store will just give me a radio for free.
