Radio17 Reviews the Rangemaster AM1000

Head over to my website for a little background on my station, as well as photos and a review of the Rangemaster AM1000. I wish I had all day to work on my station's programming, but I'm in Nursing School!!

Nice setup, have you noticed that the trees affect your signal? I will be putting up another transmitter where I cannot get above or further away from the trees than roughly 35 feet.

I run a Rangemaster and have a hill that blocks my signal to the east. It's very noticable compared to the other directions. Due to neighborhood issues, I can't go higher, so I'll have to put in another transmitter.

I've been very happy with my Rangemaster. It sounds as good as anything on the band. Now I just have to improve my processing to get a bit more modulation out of it.

The photo may give you the impression that the Rangemaster is surrounded by trees, but the tree closest to the transmitter is roughly 30 feet away. I thought that showers (wet foliage) would greatly decrease my coverage, but rain doesn't really have any affect at all.

After the fall, when there aren't any leaves on the trees, the signal doesn't really improve. So, I'm pretty happy with where it is.

The bush below the unit isn't tall enough to eclipse the transmitter housing, but it does brush against the support mast when the wind blows. No decrease or increase in signal from that either.

Let me know how your unit works when you get it on!
______________

A really affordable compressor/limiter/auto gain that works like it was built for AM is the Behringer MDX4600 Multicom Pro. Its a four channel unit with split highband and lowband processing. It has a neat 'enhance' mode that boosts the high end signal. I've found it absolutely USELESS except for AM broadcasting, and for that feature alone, the thing is worth its weight in gold.

Here's how I've set up my unit:

CHANNEL 1 (Input from board) - AGC/GATE
------------------------------------------------
TRIGGER -30
GATE OUT
RELEASE OUT
THRESHOLD -40
COUNTOUR LOW IN
ENHANCER OUT
RATIO INFINITY
INT KNEE OUT
OUTPUT +20
METER IN
IN/OUT IN
PEAK LIMITER OUT

CHANNEL 2 - SPARE
------------------------------------------------
(Run a second station's input here.)

CHANNEL 3 (Input from Channel 1) - COMPRESSOR
------------------------------------------------
TRIGGER OFF
GATE OUT
RELEASE OUT
THRESHOLD -40
COUNTOUR LOW IN
ENHANCER IN
RATIO 4:1
INT KNEE OUT
OUTPUT +15 (This is your final modulation adjustment.)
METER IN
IN/OUT IN
PEAK LIMITER +20 (Adjust to OUT if you want. Stops splatter.)

CHANNEL 4 - SPARE
------------------------------------------------
(Run another station's compressor here.)

I just had a brainstorm.
If one can adjust the phase to multiple slave units, then one can position them along ones property to direct the signal toward a desired area. Set up properly, two units can be made to get out like 400mw, three like 900mw, four like 1.6 watts, five like 2½ watts, etc. - but in an increasingly narrow beam. A respectable field level can thus be produced over a shopping area, industrial park, touristry area, or residential neighborhood (highrise buildings). Is all this phasing legal? Also, is it legal to operate this device on 1710Khz? That would be the best channel, unless you have a local 1700 station.
______________

In regards to using 1710, I have asked the FCC about that, their response was, and I quote, "No".
