RadioEq.: Savage skips own awards ceremony

Some on FreeRepublic were wondering why Michael Savage's appearance at the New Media Seminar
sponsored by TALKERS did not appear on C-SPAN. Could it be because...he didn't appear? Not in the
flesh, anyway. Brian Maloney
(I know, not everyone likes/respects him but whatever) reports on RadioEqualizer blog that Savage skipped
the ceremony but submitted a video instead. He said Michael Harrison of TALKERS was no doubt
upset at the snub.)

http://radioequalizer.blogspot.com

"Selected to receive this year's Freedom Of Speech Award at the New Media Seminar held over the weekend in New York City, Savage instead substituted a hastily- made YouTube- style home video...Filmed from his boat Patriot in an undisclosed Marin County location, Savage rattled off a number of points in rapid- fire style."

Savage apparently railed against Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and the possible re-instatement of
the Fairness Doctrine.

A comment to Maloney's blog entry says that Savage was railing against C-SPAN for "blacklisting' him
by not showing his ..."appearance". But he will sell you a DVD of it for $20...

I'm not sure which would have been worse, actually having him there in person or watching his ugly mug blown up to 20 feet tall on the movie screen like we did.

>>watching his ugly mug blown up to 20 feet tall on the movie screen

;D

The joke I always tell about MS is "one of Savage's stations decided to put on a tape loop
of him saying "borders language culture buy my book" over and over...nobody noticed the
difference" :)

I was actually looking forward to his appearance...who knows what he might have said had he appeared in person! I did find the video mostly entertaining but very odd at times.

I think he is very insecure and was scared to actually face his fellow broadcaters face to face.

lol, A right wing wacko blogger quoting a known racist Anti-American website Freerepublic about the anti-American, racist, gay basher, the Savage/Wiener.

I've caught some of Savage's shows a few times this past week. Each time I tuned in, this is what he was talking about - minus the part that his "appearance" was pre-recorded. The "Savage nation" seems not to have heard about that little detail.

Last night he was personally attacking C-SPAN head Brian Lamb (and playing sound bites of really nasty hate mail Savage fans had sent to Brian Lamb).

This may the real reason demagogic talk show hosts have their shorts in knots about the possible revival of the Fairness Doctrine. The other part of the Fairness Doctrine (besides evaluating licensees on providing a reasonable opportunity for contrasting views) was giving the objects of personal attacks the opportunity to reply. If the Fairness Doctrine were in effect, Brian Lamb (or a representative) would have to be given time on Savage's show to respond to his attack. Not debate (unless he wanted to). Not answer questions (unless he wanted to). Respond to Savage's lies, omissions and misstatements of fact.

Personal attacks, based on lies, are routine in talk radio. The Fairness Doctrine would force talk show hosts to clean up their acts or allow those they attack to reply.

Brian Lamb and C-Span wouldn't have bothered. What is most amusing about this episode is the incredible way Brian Lamb handled the whole thing, by letting the vitamin-peddler's own audience speak for itself, in the most uneducated, inpenetrable, incomprehensible, and let's be honest -- moronic way they always do. Lamb couldn't have provided a better example of Garbage In, Garbage Out if he tried, and it completely backfired on the guy who knows all the angles about raising personal wealth by sordid means - be it hawking questionable vitamins on the radio with his non-germane degree as he did before, or his custom-tailored pretend persona he invented for hot talk formats as "Michael Savage."

He looked like an idiot trying to peddle his nonsense for $20 (I guess it's sort of a red state income depletion tax charged to his audience members silly enough to cut that check), and Lamb and C-Span who are adored by the right and left came out looking like they were under a completely unfair attack, and even calls on the GOP line were extremely hostile... to Savage.

And all Lamb needed to do was read the excrement arriving in his inbox. No personal refutation required, especially to the guy who likes to throw around his educational background and still gives us gems like this one: "the sun the largest star in our solar system."

>>And all Lamb needed to do was read the excrement arriving in his inbox

Is Savage about to go the way of Mort Downey Jr--remember the "attack at the airport" where
some skinheads drew a backwards swastika on his face, or was that Mort himself...? Rushing
toward irrelevance--this does really shatter Savage's credibility. Did MS admit yet that he didn't
show up for the speech?

In contrast to Rush, who claims HE is the largest star in our solar system. LOL

Savage claims a PhD in "Nutritional Ethnomedicine," from the University of California at Berkeley. Actually, that was the title of his dissertation. His doctorate is in Molecular and Biochemical Nutrition. Unlike "Dr. Mike" Newcomb, he holds a true academic doctorate from a very selective research university, relevant to some of the topics he talks about on his show. Also unlike Newcomb, he does use his academic title to promote himself or his show (although he mentions it in his bios and some callers use the title when addressing him).

Maybe Savage and Newcomb could do a health advice show together. That might be more interesting.

Did MS admit yet that he didn't show up for the speech?

Nope.

Did anyone ever stop to consider that many talk show hosts charge a healthy fee for doing personal appearances. The chicken-dinner lecture circuit is often a second source of income for radio personalities, just as it is for television personalities and politicians. One of the easiest ways to get around paying the customary appearance fees is to offer the person the organization wants as a guest some sort of cockamamie award. The idea is getting the award is supposed to be such a big honor that the award will substitute for the customary fee. Some celebrities have egos big enough that they'll accept some made-up award in lieu of payment, others don't.

And some get both the money .... and the award.

Hint: "Now you know.... the rest of the story."

Of course, Talkers Magazine is pretty shameless in who they hand out awards to. The whole thing is a fishwrapper of a trade magazine anyway, such as Harrison's "drawn from a hat randomly" top 100 talkers list which bears no relation... to anything. Giving a Freedom of Speech award to Michael Savage is like giving Adolph Eichmann a B'nai B'rith Achievement Award. And considering Savage basically phones in his outrage by simply pushing the envelope to feed his angry white guy audience anyway, it's no surprise he was too lazy to show up for his "award."
