Radio's Neil Rogers "On The Market"

Live everyone else in the radio market these days, Beasley is making cuts. And a great way to save $$ is to cut the big salaries. Neil was a PRIME candidate. He might still be getting good numbers, but I can't imagine he's up in ratings or revenue.

And where would he go? Clear Channel? Doubt it! Not for the money he now gets on QAM. Who else is there? James Crystal. HIGHLY doubt that. Independent company does not have that kind of cash

Unfortunately, for Neil, satellite will never happen for him. Outside of So Florida, no one knows who he is. XM is not going to give him $1 mil for a small region.

So, it's either 1) a pay cut for Neil - on QAM or one of the other outlets or 2) retirement.

You had a great run Neil! Hope you have a fun retirement in Toronto and Amsterdam

WQAM driving Neil Rogers away

An article from Sun-Sentinel TV/Radio writer Tom Jicha:

WQAM driving Neil Rogers away

In an effort to trim costs, the station is driving away South Florida's No.1 personality, Neil Rogers, who says an insulting contract offer led him to decide he will leave the station no later than a year from now when his contract expires.

Neil's agent Norman "Norma" Kent should have been negotiating with Sirius (Neil has been open about his disdain for XM because of their connection with Clear Channel Comm.). How many people throughout the country knew of Bubba The Love Sponge before Sirius? Just slightly more than those who know about Neil. If Neil were picked up by Sirius, it would take some time for the uninitiated to catch on but they'll catch on. You can't do anything about those who don't/won't like his show; it comes with the territory.

As for Amsterdam: Neil gave up his apartment there years ago because the mold in his place triggered his allergies. Besides, he has an affinity for Germany (he probably has Freddie Mercury to thank for that ;D ).

Bubba actually had wider reach prior to his satellite show. His morning show was syndiated to cities all over Florida, including West Palm Beach. In addition, I believe his show was syndicated for a brief time to a couple of random markets up North, including one in Connecticut and one in Ohio. Perhaps someone from the Tampa board can enlighten us with details....

Neil's been at this for a looong time. He could work anywhere anytime and put on a hell of a show. He's no one station wonder.

Sirius hired a bunch of local New York talkers and CBS-FM staff like Cousin Brucie.

The question locally is, what on earth is WQAM going to do now? They lose their highest rated show & top biller. They sent Hank packing, along with Ed Kaplan. That's 9 hours of programming they have to fill & they have no young up & coming local talent. Would they consider flipping formats? They couldn't right? If not they would've kept Neil. So, what is going on over there?

I don't think it's the end of the world for WQAM. They still have Joe Rose, Jim Mandich, the Dolphins and canes. And my guess is, they'll hire replacements for the departed. I'd hate to see Neil go, but Hank and Eddie K were over the hill. Life goes on.

People complain about radio being too vanilla in 2007...at least Neal always spoke his peace! Thank goodness streaming became available and we could enjoy him on the net up here in Rocky Top!

Amen. I listen to Neil every day on the web and to the archieves every evening. He makes every national personality of any political persuation pale by comparison. Neil Rogers is by far the best extemperaneous speaker in all of talk radio. Stern, Bob and Tom, and the rest are all scripted.
Neil is not.

In listening to Neil, it sounds like he's determined to get out of WQAM. Possible Replacements on 560:

1) Jorge Rodriguez- Long time Neil fill in could be the long term answer. But Jolly Joe hates him...don't see this happening. Jorge goes with Neil to new station

2) Neil protege Randi Rhodes might be talked into a South Florida return

3) If Joel Feinberg walks from his LMA with LF, both Dan LeBatard and Sid Rosenberg could be in play

4) WQAM could put a syndicated morning show (O&A, Bob and Tom, etc) on the air and move Joe Rose into Neils slot

5) It's a long shot, but Tony Bruno has left Sporting News Radio. There are worse places to be than Miami.

Any idea on where Neil will end up?

I think he goes back to WIOD from 9am-noon. He'll be 66 when the QAM deal expires so a three-hour show might be enticing. Although his liberal beliefs go against the grain of CC and WIOD, Neil is a money-maker and plays well in an adverse situation. If
CC and Neil could both prosper from the arrangement, it could work out.
