Do they make portable HD radio boomboxes?

-Rob

No.

Some say HD radio might be able to be included in portable radios sometime in the future if manufacturers can drastically lower HD radio's power consumption so it can be powered by typical batteries, improve reception and reliability without carrying extra large external antennas.

In the days before the first "official" portable satellite radios were introduced, there were some pretty strange home-brew "solutions". It might actually be fun to custom build a "boombox" with a large-capacity power source, something like a Radiosophy cheapie radio, a small "Class T Amplifier" from someone like Sonic Impact. This amp would be fun for any project-tinkerer to get his hands on http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=300-958 and since it's already designed for battery operation, it's perfect for a God-awful, ugly as sin, impractically huge kit. Add some speakers, a custom case, and you have a conversation-starter (and probably ender, as psople stare). I know, most will find this idea ridiculous (it is, to be honest). But others will say "cool idea!" LOL! As long as there are geeks, soldering irons, and places like Parts Express, or your favorite electronic parts store (sadly Radio Shack's a BIG disappointment in this area these days)...the sky's the limit! Pocket protector optional!

Here is avid HD radio supporter/broadcaster Radio Disney's solution to problematic portable HD Radio reception:

I don't know - if you made an 8 inch set of Mickey ears, I could fit a Terk AM advantage inside it and get decent AM signal pickup. Or make the Mickey ears 14 inches and hide a Select-A-Tenna in there. I bet I could get a pretty good Radio Disney signal in a decently sizing Mickey ear package - whether it would have enough signal to bring in HD lock is another matter.

Given the prices, they could have easily been selling C-Quam radios for $25 on that web site that work for 290 miles - in stereo - on our local Radio Disney affiliate before they messed around with IBOC - in mono only - that only goes a few miles. I really wonder about the business plan that counts on little kids shelling out $200 for HD radios instead of $25 for C-Quam radios.

I don't just wonder about Radio Disney's business plan for HD Radio. I wonder about Radio Disney's business plan period. Radio aimed at kids, who have no money, and won't be employed for many years. I know, when the kids listen their moms hear the commercials. That's kind of like advertising the latest women's apparel in Playboy because your wife or girlfriend might just pick up one of yours and thumb through it. Wait, my wife DOES do that. At least she reads the jokes. Me, I get it for the articles (or I used to. The girls look so damn young now, I end up wondering what their mothers look like).

Cute little amplifier, in a butt ugly sort of way. I wonder how long it runs on a set of AA cells? Not long, I'd guess. Of course, you could run everything off of a rechargeable gel-cell battery. Or, Honda makes some fairly quiet gas powered generators. They might be just the ticket, and you could add a small refrigerator to keep the beer cold. A 2 wheel dolly would be handy for taking it to the beach... ;)
