I noticed Raj co-anchoring the news on Saturday along with Dianne Dwyer. Didn't watch long enough for Sports, but they seem to be grooming him for a future anchor slot.

Not without precedent in the Bay Area. Think Jan Hutchins, who moved from sports anchor on KPIX to news anchor at KICU (1980s).

Going back further, Van Amburg was sports director at KPIX before he became the high rated news anchor at KGO-TV in the late 60s or early 70s.
 
Look Bill Weir at KABC 7 had the fill in Sports Desk in 2001-2002 before he went to ABC to do GMA weekend editions. I also noticed that Larry Beil did Fill in Anchoring at KGO 7 5pm news for a while when Dan Ashley was on assignment.
