Raleigh/Durham Sports Stations

Of the three sports stations in the Raleigh/Durham market, if anyone changes
format after the "Fall Book" concludes, it might be "850 The Buzz" since they
already have a "Sports/Talk" local morning show, but WRBZ has good coverage
during the day, probably could give WPTF a little competition since outside
morning drive, no local talk show airs middays or early evenings, and i'm sure
triangle radio listeners would welcome something different.
As for "99.9 The Fan" don't expect to hear "Atlanta Braves Baseball" next season,
i think you will hear the "Durham Bulls" since Capitol Broadcasting Company, the
parent operation of WCMC, will put the games on here.

Maybe if 99.9 can't break a 2 share, they will challenge CMG head-on again. Instead of going after QDR, maybe next time they go after La Ley...

hey, how about this: they become the NEW New River against 100.7--the only difference is, they would play Comfortably Numb every 15 minutes instead of every 30 minutes

by the way, dittohead, are you implying that La Ley is, perhaps, in La Toilet? I thought north carolina was riding the wave of catering to illegal aliens in every way possible.....has it started to backfire in radio? If so, what went wrong? redneck backlash? relocated yankee backlash?

I am amazed at how quickly some of you write off a station that has been in format a week! I don't think any of them are likely to switch based on the fall book. All I know is that the Bull has trouble covering the market and while they might like to hold onto ESPN, ESPN is really driving the train that decides who is an affiliate.

The "FAN" Jim Goodman's baby. He's wanted this sports station for a year or two. There will be no change in format. Jim will put as much money in it as it needs and with the resources of Capitol Sports, the Fan will be a winner. By the way, the station plans to move to the TV-5 building in the next year. One more thing, one of the reasons The Fan was created was to go after the News and Observer...believe it or not.

Why would they go after "The News & Observer" when Capitol Broadcasting's
WRAL-TV has a public affairs program "Headline Saturday" which the Raleigh
Newspaper teams up with them each week.

It's not war with the N&O. Capitol Sports knows that the N&O has an infinite number of readers that turn to their sports pages every day so, they want those readers to gradually turn toward their new sports venture on the radio.

Also, doesn't WRAL have the weather page in the N&O? ??? Talk about biting the hand that feeds ya...

The answer, Stuart, lies in the dial position and lack of the ability to serve the Arbitron market! a station on a local channel (1,000 watts) at the high end of the dial has no chance of putting a signal into enough homes an cars to be competitive.

I suspect if you could do a zip code break out of 1490's signal area, they probably did OK in the ratings. Just not well enough to be competitive when you look at the entire market (like the media buyers do).

Failure is usually about revenue!

Now that WCMC "99.9 The Fan" is in its third week of operation, one thing I've noticed is an almost complete lack of promotion. The only promotions I've seen were inclusion of the logo and an empty desk at the WRAL Tent at the NC State Fair and the banner on the sports section of WRAL.com. Is anyone aware of any promotions they're doing? Conspicuously absent are TV ads, billboards and co-branding ON WRAL-TV or Fox 50. It's not like this was a spur of the moment format switch, either. I remember that the station's country format ran the better part of a year mostly jockless, which certainly didn't help them (signal issues, taking on a heritage station, and facing competition from a more powerful upstart aside). Perhaps there's a strategy of which I'm unaware, but it seems to the casual observer that they should come on strong with promoting the new station, especially given the fact they're facing two established competitors in the format. Capitol certainly has the tools to do some unique things with his station and its format, such as heavy cross-promotion with the WRAL Sports brand.
