Ralph Emery's Comeback?

I was thinking today "what ever happened to Ralph Emery", longtime overnight star at WSM, syndicated radio host on hundreds of country stations, & early star of TNN's "Nashville Now". I found his website and discovered he's planning a "comeback" for Fall as host of a show to be taped for a live audience and available to buy a show at a time as a webcast or on DVD. Has anyone heard of this, and is this a new concept? The show will feature his old sidekick "Shotgun Red" and interviews with classic country artists. Interesting concept, but will it work?

It amazes me that the so-called "country" Cable channels like GAC and CMT cannot find time for a half hour or an hour a day (or even a week) to air a show from a legend like Ralph Emery,,Just a total shame In My Opinion..

But, CMT can run cowboy reality shows, Dukes reruns, the same biographies over & over... TNN was such a good balance of videos, 'live' variety shows, the Opry, I still miss having such a channel. I don't get GAC so I can't comment on their programming compared to CMT. TNN's Saturday nights attracted an older audience, but did well among those viewers with the Opry & Statlers. I agree, why couldn't Ralph Emery be on, say early Sunday mornings? Not sure his audience will pay for internet viewing, maybe will buy DVD's of shows they're interested in.

RFD-TV
is currently running the original episodes of Pop Goes The
Country and several other classic country music shows from the
70's. The channel is billing them as actually being part of
Willie Nelson's personal video library (don't know if this is
true thought I suppose it could be.) Ralph Emery would be a
perfect fit on this channel. It's carried on Direc TV here in
Tennessee but not sure if it's carried nationwide. Either way,
Pop Goes The Country brings back lots of great performances!
There is definitely a place for this type of show.

I agree on the major country channels not wanting to show it anymore... Espcially since Viacom (owner of MTV and VH1) "punked" out CMT and TNN (now called Spike TV) and "citified them"

RFD TV is caried Nationwide on both small dish carriers (Direct and Dish) as well as some Cable companies mainly in rural america

Selling the shows on DVD and internet to classic country fans are going to be a very hard sell IMO as most aren't enough internet savy to go and buy the program on the net and most people are scared of buying a program on DVD if they don't know the program already or haven't heard about it.

My opinion is Ralph Emery needs to format this into a radio show for classic country stations and those stations that play it, play it on there and I think DVD sales and such can follow if people want to see their favorite performers that way.. Besides he'll get a lot more exposure that way with the main people he is aiming for.

If Ralph comes back, could Williams & Ree return (we hope not!)

Ralph Emery

Ralph Emery has been on RFD-TV for the past couple of years hosting an hour interview show called, "Ralph Emery Live". It airs at 6pm (central time) on Monday nights.

Nashville Now was the highest rated show and made most of the money for TNN outside of the motorsports programming. You would think RFDTV, CMT and/or GAC could find a time slot for it. Actually, come to think of it, I can understand why CMT can't find time for it. They are too busy going after the "younger" demographic.

Maybe no "Nasville Now" has to do with issues about paying the guests for residuals, much like why the Tonight Show and Ed Sullivan are both cost prohibitive to rerun on commercial tv.

A lot of the classic Tonight Shows were erased as video tape was very expensive during the 2" Quad days. So the tapes were recycled for reuse and I suspect that the same went for Sullivan as well. The very early Sullivan shows might still exist on Kinescope somewhere but a lot of those got trashed as storage space was cleared. Jack Paar kept ownership of his kinescopes and tapes but whoever inherited them has not seen fit to do anything with them.

There are clips of performances from "Nashville Now" on You Tube so the tapes are out there someplace as some of them look better than someone's home VCR taping.
