ralphie radio train wreck

I have stated how much I hate spoon fed, non local voice track shows so I wont go on about that. Thursday Sept 17 they had Ralphie do his show from WPRO in Providence I am guessing because he was doing local appearances in an attempt to keep the facade that he is local up. What a disaster.... Not more than 30 minutes into the show there was like a 5 minute pause right after him speaking until an ad kicked in. Then he had an interview with an artist, that was a disaster! It sounded like he or an engineer never brought the mics back up. Could barely hear their voices, real bad.

It is sad that our once great local radio has been reduced to this. I am not sure if it was them trying to do something that the WPRO facilities werent equiped to do or just that the people who do the show just were not familier with the WPRO equipment.

One more Seacrest wannabee. Whatever happened to jocks putting something of themselves into a show instead of basing it all on celebrity interviews and gossip.

That's such a good point. I think the internet has turned us all into a bunch of lazy bastards. Everybody is so busy wasting time on the net that nobody does sh*t anymore. Now even the jocks just grab their ready made news off the web. Saves them time so that they can facebook their friends all day. If the internet suddenly went away tomorrow I'm convinced that radio would get better. People might start getting creative again.

Yea. Its just so generic. He isnt quite as bad when he is local outside of sounding like an amature with bad mic levels and such. He did a couple of call in contests and such. The crap that usually gets piped in via voice tracks is just sad.

Before the Internet there were "radio show prep" services, with the same kind of crap. You would just get it in a fax rather than from the Internet. The Internet has not made jocks lazy - if the listeners didn't want to hear celebrity gossip, then they wouldn't talk about it. The Internet can be an excellent source of information for the jock that wants to put time and effort into their show.

I agree that the internet can be a good tool. But what I'm saying is that people are wasting so much time doing NON-PRODUCTIVE things on the internet, that they don't have any time left to work on their show. I've fallen into that same trap before. 16 awake hours in the day to be productive and I've easily wasted 15 hours on stupid sh*t.

I agree with you as for people using the internet doing non productive things but that has little to do with radio today. The problem with radio today is that it has been allowed to be corperatized. Take 92 for instance, before bein gobbled up by Citidel they had great jocks on all the time, morning, afternoons, evenings, weekends. Now the evenings are just pre-recorded snippets from ralphie. Its cheaper to do. That is what these large corperations do, operate as cheaply as possible. Look at WSNE, I am suprised if they didnt turn their studios into a U-Store-IT facility yet. Even tho I have Citidel stock I still hope the whole thing collapses and some of these stations get bought up by smaller, more local investers. Kind of a get back to basics aproach to have radio return to the quality of the past.

riradio02842 has it right. The content hasn't changed much. The Internet has just made it easier to prep & the info is more immediate than the old faxed or even mailed services. The best air personalities are still the ones who are quick thinking with a sense of humor. Unfortunatey too many of them are not working. You could build a great airstaff just using those who are on the beach or being underutilized. What does that say about a market?

Ralphie Aversa nights on PRO-FM but he works at WBHT in Wilkes Barre Pa. I heard him only once not realizing he would be voicetracked on PRO-FM. I thought it was going to be a syndicated show. Odd that it's the smaller market CHR that can afford a night jock and PRO-FM can't get one they can have voicetrack in Wilkes Barre.

Not for nothing but I used to listen to Jay Buff on PRO, I think he is on weekends still. He looks like he is just a kid but he had a pretty decent show. PROs website still lists him as a weekender but if they were smart they would put him on nights.

If they had money to spend they could put him on nights or could have kept Kerry Collins on nights or they could take Tony Bristol off the air on Lite and D-Pain off the air on Hot and the neighborhood off mornings on Hot 106. But they don't want to spend it so they won't do any of it. Nights have become a wasteland everywhere anyway. Too much competiton from other media to matter who is on. The days of some high school girl swooning over her favorite nighttime jock are over.

Yeah... AND that is just the evening jock. How about the poor schlep who does overnights? The only thing worse is getting stuck doing weekend overnights. That's really the bottom of the barrel.

Night time is a differant story, having a but in the seat after midnight is a waste. Just do what PRO does and put music on auto pilot and dont even pay for the syndicated stuff, save the money and put it toward the times where people actually listen.

Too much competition from other media? Like what? TV? Didnt realize that TV wasnt 30 years old. No one is listening to evenings because there is nothing to listen to. No interaction, no reason to listen. Obviously during weeknights people are going to be watching TV as apposed to listening to the radion but during the summer months when people are outside more later there is no reason radio cannot capitolize on that. I know personally that during the summer months on most days I am not in the house prior to 9PM on average. Winter is a differant story tho

There is no serious money being spent on advertising after 6p industry wide, hence the need for cutbacks, VT, Satellite, etc. If ad agencies would direct targeted buys somewhere outside of 5:30a-6p, then you might see a different landscape in the industry; but that money has dried up (only stations seeing some good nighttime money is the sports stations and some of the talk stations)
