Yup, IT'S TRUE!

Don't know if there's a podcast of this on myfoxlubbock.com, but Chuck Heinz doesn't know the format of his owns stations! He was filling in for Jim Douglas on Thursday morning on FoxTalk 950 when he said this: "Stars 104.3 is Adult Contemporary..." (ok, kinda true) and "Hot 104.3, their format is Today's Hit Music."

Did you get that?
Hot 104.3 is "Today's Hit Music??"

It seems Chuck doesn't know the difference between Hip Hop and Top 40. He must think Z102 and The BEAT have the same format?
AND THIS IS THE GM IN CHARGE OF MAKING DECISIONS FOR 4 RADIO STATIONS!

No wonder The BEAT is beating his sorry but! Ya gotta feel for the guys who work at 104.3, they are stuck on a rudderless ship!
 
He could be trying to play down the hip hop label to broaden the appeal of the format beyond the core listeners. I recall a major market country station that referred to itself as ''musicradio.'' It didn't use the word country in any of their slogans... and it worked for years.

This is a typo, he said Stars 97.3
 
That morning show is very hard to listen to.

I think their GM should also worry about the fact they are news talk and they have a sports show on during midday followed by an ag show and Dr. Laura.

Who wants to listen to that? I want to listen to news talk so I switch over to 790.
 
Personally, and what the hell do I know, they need to get rid of the morningshow. I was watching it the other day and it's not that it sucked... it was just really boring. So, I guess that would mean that it sucked. As for other things... YES, Dr. Laura has got to go. That show is horrible. Yeah, I know I am not the demo for that pathetic program. However, it still sucks. This is not 1996 anymore. She is old news. The best show they have is TECH TALK. I'm not much of a sports radio fan, however, I do enjoy the show when I listen. However, I know, I know... they aren't a sports station. Yet, I would have no problem with the station being all over the place with TALK related shows as long as they were entertaining. I mean, if you want a republican mouth piece... you got KFYO. Chad & Rex along with Rush are the best things about that station. Listening to HANNITY is simply listening to EVERYTHING Rush just talked about for 3 hours and extremely less entertaining.

My thing is, if your ratings are extremely poor, in the case of FOX TALK, then why don't you dump the shows that are bringing you down? If it's not broke... you don't need to fix. However, when it is broke... you have got to fix it!

You must be asking about KFYO. Personally, I don't know how their ratings are for the local shows. I would imagine that CHAD & REX do well, if not very well. As for PRATT... I would imagine that his are as well. However, he doesn't have any competition though either. I mean, there is Dennis Miller, which is a freaking great show, however, it's over on 1420. So, there is no promotion, for the most part, when it comes to that show or even that station. The only reason I even know of 1420 is because months ago someone on here spoke about it... so I turned it on. I think 1420 is just some sort of TAX write off. As for any other competition, I believe FOX 950 has Bill O, O, O, O'Reilly on at the same time. However, I don't bother listening. So, as far as local competition is concerned... there is none for PRATT when it comes to talk radio. If some PD/GM would get some guts and put someone on locally up against him... then you would have an interesting situation. However, I think you would have to put someone on that was not some extreme conservative. Why add another GOP mouth piece to the radio landscape? Shake it up a bit and see what happens. It would either be very successful or very unsuccessful. I don't know if there would be much of a middle.

But then.... what do I know.
 
This is how sad it has become. Lubbock radio is crap, but all radio is crap now. No water cooler talk anywhere about anything a radio station has done. All the same chart (insert format) music every 2.5 hours. It's amazing the stuff that actually flys now. Dead air is all over the place and no big deal. Fading out of songs to backtime is ok now. I hear it all the time. Jocks on the air that couldn't get a weekend overnight gig 12 years ago are now doing middays, afternoon drive, etc. For "business people" corporate radio people sure don't know how to run a business. Cutting live air staff from your budget makes as much sense as not putting oil in your car to cut costs. A quart of oil and the average jocks salary really aren't that much money in the large scheme of things, but not having them can kill your investment. Oh well, back to my IPod.
 
I agree that the Fox morning show is pure crap but I think Tech Talk is okay.

I don't really care for Hasty but his show is listenable. Same with Williams and Hyatt show, that show though seems to have lost something over the years.

Pratt is good just because it's something different to listen to. I really enjoy the local aspect of talk shows if they can give me a reason to listen.
 
KFYO is the best talk station in Lubbock but in my opinion Hasty is better than Pratt. 1340 hasn't really improved even though they got rid of Mark Finkner, and I agree with JJones...W&H sounds worse than it has in a very long time and I'm not sure why.
 
When it comes to W&H, the guys are great guys, but the show seems to sound like the same thing day after day. As for KFYO being the best talk station... even though it is a good station... there really isn't any other REAL talk stations in town to compare it to or put it up against. It's like saying FMX is the best ROCK station in town. It's no lie or a secret that I LOVE FMX... and YES it is a GREAT station... however if there was another ROCK station somewhere else on the dial... then things would get really interesting.

If your at the top of the mountain and there is no one to fight from kicking you off the top... then what fun is that?

So, BILL O'RIELLY has said that he is looking at dumping the radio and just doing TV. So, IF and I stress IF this is true... what does RAMAR do? Do they just pick up another syndicated show, probably just another conservative, or do they think outside the box and get someone local? It's not like it would HURT them anymore in the ratings if they DID try a local show.

Also, and this is RANDOM... however the woman who comes on AFTER Keith Olbermann (who HATES BILL O'RIELLY)...Rachel Maddow.... this woman annoys the crap out of me. She is literally a FEMALE Kieth Olbermann. Watch his show... then watch hers just for a minute. It's literally like watching OLBERMANN with BOOBS and she is 1000 times less entertaining.
 
That would be interesting if O'Reilly bolted. Is there anyone in town that could do a good job with a show at that time?

I like the local shows if they are at all well done. That's what is frustrating about the morning show. I want to listen in the morning but they don't give me any reason to! Jim Douglas, while a great guy, is not a guy who should be hosting a radio show.
 
950 should go local and maybe try to steal one of the KFYO guys IF they can. Why steal? There isn't any talent left in Lubbock to go over there (for what I've heard they pay). They could always go straight sports and just give up going against KFYO.
 
Unfortunately I think your exactly right, regarding the issue of money. That station (FOX 950) is NEVER going to get anywhere if they don't start spending some money. That's exactly the same reason that STARZ will NEVER really get anywhere as well.
 
I have heard 950 pay is awful.

Actually Tech Talk seems better suited for KKAM where they don't have a local midday right now.
