Yeah, when I worked at KKAM and KFYO, the TT sports was always a pain in the you know what. I remember (and I think a few of you can back me up on this), whenever there was a Tech football game, all the energy in the building went to that game. I remember, I'd be in the KFYO control room, and couldn't touch the button bars on the computer server, because those were being used as over flow spots for the game on KKAM. I mean the whole building would be running around for it. Even worse was when there were multiple games for different sports. One day we had to juggle Rangers, Red Raider Football and Red Raider Basketball. OY, WHAT A PAIN!!!!!
I also never understood why we had to have 2 radio stations running the same games at the same time, and why was one always an FM? It's true that many Rock stations around the country also run NFL football, and Red Raiders are similar. But Baasketball? Women's Basketball? Hockey? I mean, it wasn't like the FM stations covered any listening area that KKAM or KFYO couldn't cover.
Now, that said, I have to really wonder what the future holds for KKAM. One thing that I knew is that the GM at the time (now departed) was the whole force behind KKAM. That was his baby and everything in the station group centered around KKAM and KFMX, I guess because those were his original stations before the Gulfstar merger. He would often brag about how everyone said a sports station wouldn't work and he proved them wrong. So all these Red Raider sports seemed as some way to appease Texas Tech and keep KKAM on the air. Meanwhile, KFYO and Z102 were getting second banana, exiled to a darkly lit end of the floor that nobody went to. Now, it is pretty obvious that the priority has changed. Still, without Red Raider sports, or Cowboys football (or Rangers, not that they would want them) what's the whole point of KKAM now? The "lets talk about sports" station?
I am also wondering exactly where this Sports station of RAMAR's will be. If its on 104.3, I don't see that because of the rimshot signal they have. 97.3 has a GREAT city grade signal now, but fades just as you get north of Texas Tech. Fox Talk 950 has significant pattern issues after sunset because they have to protect WWJ AM 950 in Detroilt. Majic is their baby. Maybe they will move Majic to 104.3? Maybe 97.3 and 104.3 will simulcast? But then is Hot really doing that bad? I have a lot of questions as to any of this is fact or just baseless rumor.
