Randall Bloomquist.....

....Gave me a HUGE career break; a chance to do Talk Radio in the Nation's Capitol. As he packs his bags for Atlanta, I wanted to publicly say thanks, and sincerely express my appreciation to Randall for allowing me to share the issues with the best News/Talk audience in the country.

Good Luck, Sir!

Good for you. But are you the replacement for Graham? If not, then have Randall give you a break in Atlanta, where he is now. Something BIG has to happen at WMAL. That station is boring. You have a great voice (sound-wise), but I haven't heard a great talk show from you -- it's been mediocre at best. While you bring up interesting topics, you don't have much to expound upon -- you hammer one item over and over and over and over......

What do the rest of you think? Am I wrong? I just don't think Mr. Wells is exploding the phones and making "things happen" in DC. But then again, neither is anyone else at WMAL. Is Wells the permanent 9a-12p host?

More importantly, is John Matthews actually in the running for PD? Wow! Management must really think Disney is serious about selling!!!!!!

Thanks for your qualified compliments....But do you really think that WMAL is boring? Considering the simply excellent issue-driven content discussion on air day after day on that station, perhaps it's not thoughtful, well-reasoned talk you seek...If I may invoke a sports analogy: Baseball is only dull, to the dull.

More qualification...but again, my thanks. So, to clarify, is it your assertion that my preparation is somehow lacking, or are you attempting to blame me for your lack of an attention span?

Wells is nothing more than a fill-in host on one of the greatest talk stations in the country. "Exploding phones"? Not my thing. How about hard truth delivered fresh, hot and real every day? I'll gladly trade one truthful conversation for a thousand shrill screams suited only to simplistically triggering adrenaline-calloused nerve endings.

Now about Mr. Wells (was Bloomquist)

I do think WMAL is boring, at least up until Chris Core. Core holds intelligent conversation and asks thought-provoking questions. Rush has become a Republican shill who thinks listeners are very excited to hear all about HIM.

I will stand by my evaluation of your talk show. I'm not criticizing or commenting on your prep -- I have no idea how much or what your read to prepare. I will say though that you don't seem to "add" to your content. In other words, you (and many other talk hosts) say the same thing over and over again, seeking callers who agree with you and add their similiar comments. What I want to hear in a talk show is someone who puts out some information, talks about it, then adds some new information, talks about that, then adds more new information, etc. To continually talk about one aspect of any issue without exploring other avenues gets boring. Where's the "thoughtful, well-reasoned talk"? That's what I look for in a talk show. Not you asking the same questions to different callers.

It has nothing to do with a short attention span (and I will refrain from attacking you as you did me. I commented on your work, not on YOU proper.) Nonetheless, looking for comments from listeners, i.e. "exploding the phones" was something Bloomquist sought. He also wanted "shrill screams" to trigger "adrenaline-calloused nerve endings" as you say. That was Michael Graham's job, was it not????? If you admire Bloomquist, then it would follow that you would do similar work.

WMAL -- one of "the greatest talk stations in the country"? Sorry, doesn't seem so. If it was, then why does it not do better in the ratings? Why is it that talk radio flops in the nation's capital -- a place one would expect to be a hotbed of talk radio! Great talk stations??? Try WABC, WPRO, WSB, WLS, WBT. Those are some great stations.

Former WBTer here, now living in DC, with PD experience.

Bloomquist has made some desperately needed changes at stations too set in their ways. His brash style earned him some enemies at WBT, but he did the right thing, even if they didn't want to admit it.

Which is why I've been disappointed in WMAL. Maybe the power structure of ABC radio was too strong for him to circumvent. But the station is boring. 980 is more fun to listen to.

WMAL needs to change: Gopher in the Morning, the back to back lineup of Rush and Hannity, and, well.... some of the local stuff.

WMAL is being whipped soundly by a non-comm talk station, possibly by two within the year unless changes are made.

WABC - market #1 - 6.75 hrs local/day
WSB - market #10 - 4 hrs local/day
WLS - market #3 - good, but shadow of its former self

Yea, great!

Great talk stations

LOCAL does not make a good talk station. Great talent makes a great talk station. Andy and Grandy ain't great.

I would agree; WMAL basically does the heritage morning show. I don't see them picking up some wild man for AMD anytime soon. My point with the local content is that it demonstrates effort. Don't tell me Sean Hannity is a great show - it's not. He's there because ABC distributes the show. If WMAL was owned by CC, he'd be on late at night a la WTKK/Boston. The bottom line is that there's a gross ton of syndicated rubbish out there for the taking, and any PD's toddler could fill a lineup off the bird. People like local content, and the talk stations with huge shares have at least a decent amount of local talk proportional to their market size.
