That's probably the idea. They sign her, make a half-arsed effort to clear her, then fold after a year and declare "See! Liberal talk doesn't work!" It's a self-fulfilling prophecy to please the talent they really care about (Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity).
...and the scam is as old as Tom Leykis' first years as a politically-moderate talker on Westwood One. I know of at least two stations who ran Leykis for ONE WEEK in 1994 -- in one case, Thanksgiving Week at that -- before pulling the plug on him because their Limbot audience bitched too much about it...
My god, they served their niche! Bastards.

Welcome to radio, you don't hear Jay-Z on the country station do you?

...FYI, in that Thanksgiving Week case, Limblow led into Alan Colmes, then a couple of hours of Barry Farber before Leykis. Colmes stayed on the station in that slot until Daynet folded, which makes the Leykis cancellation scam particularly suspect there...

Explain this scam.

i really wonder how well her show is doing now. kptk 1090 seattle (the station i listen to the vast majority of the time) yanked her show to play nor man gold man live and TAPE ron reagan in her old spot, even though ron broadcasts out of seattle. and then i hear that green 960 san fransisco, the station that had gone to bat for her time and time again has also pulled her for nor man and is airing mike malloy live.

those were two of the biggest stations that brought her back twice and also kept listeners informed of the status regarding bringing her back. to go in a different direction for a startup show with a host who has, face it, not much experience doing their own show every day so soon after bringing her back is not a good sign as far as i'm concerned in terms of the perceived survivability of progressive talk. a big name in progressive talk getting bounced completely from two major progressive talkers? not good. although it may be the case that she no longer is a good fit for the stations she is on.

i have not heard her show since she came back, but the two things i have heard are that she is a lot more tolerant of conservatives and harder on the callers who bash conservatives and she took keith olbermann to task for his hour long special comment on the health care reform issue for being too long. sounds like to me she went from being progressive to democratic to centrist to appease her clear channel overlords.

Here's a question. Which progressive/liberal talk show host currently has the most clears? There were certainly a LOT more liberal talk formatted stations four years ago or so. WINZ and WYTS come to mind, but there were many more. Especially in the Clear Channel empire.

Yes CC is going bankrupt yet all management has to do all day is sign Randi Rhodes and not clear her to promote their political ideology

Clear Channel, bastion of rock ribbed conservatism co sponsors "Hopenhagen" which is trying for a far left agenda worldwide. Hmm

You see... they pay her money to fail.

THEY want her to be marginalized and not make them money then they...

Anyone care to fill in the blanks?

Who here believe if all Rush's advertisers went away he would still be on the air to push an agenda?

What radio company cleared more AAR programming than anyone else?
What company did Rhodes rise to fame with?

Hint: The last two answers are the same.

Does Randi stand to benefit from the closure of her former Air America as far as scoring more stations, if so, how many?

I doubt that she will benefit at all. Air America fed a repeat of the Montel Williams show during her time period and I'm not aware of any stations that carried Williams during that period. The only weekday Air America show that was getting much in the way of clearances was the Ron Reagan show, which had 42 affiliates, and Reagan is continuing to syndicate the show himself while he looks for a deal with an outside syndicator.

WWRL in New York City was carrying Montel from 3-6 pm. That would be a nice pickup for Randi.

Williams was on WWRL because Air America was paying for the time. That's the way you get on WWRL. Does Premiere want to pay for the slot? No.
